When I pull my engine

When I pull my engine - 03/21/10 11:12 PM

Alight so when I get all the parts im planning to put in I'm thinking I'll pull the engine. I figure that should make installing the cam a lot easier.

Cam
Headers
3.4 Pulley MPS
180 T-Stat
90# Springs & Standard Retainers
New Timing Chain

Should I do anything else while I have the engine pulled?

I might also buy a shift kit from ZZP to maybe help support the tranny since it will pretty much be at its limit.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/21/10 11:34 PM

Yeah definitely get the shift kit!

I'm thinking the headers will have to be done with the engine in the car.

Sounds like a solid build you have going on. I'll have to check it out sometime.

Yea I had the purple gt lol. I have time and money now because I'm working full time now opposed to 2 days a week when I was in high school. Took a year off of school so I can chill and get things in order. So now instead of $90 a week I'm making $300 or more if I decide to pick up more shifts. And the gt was a lost cause so I sold it to a friend for $1k.

Lol why can't you do headers with the motor outside the car?

And by tensioner he means timing chain tensioner.

Grab a cam install kit at least dude! I would advise a full engine gasket kit.

What cam are you going with?

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/22/10 04:15 PM

I'm looking at the vs cam off zzp, that's what chico suggested for a DD. And I only have about 58k on the car so idk if that would change any suggestions.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/22/10 04:20 PM

Why would you do a new timing chain but not do a new tensioner? lol

You should still get a cam install kit. Your going to need new rocker bolts anyway.

Kit choice is up to you. Their are differing opinions on whether you need to get a cam and crank bolt but to be honest why put yourself in the position to worry just replace em. I'd go kit 4.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/22/10 05:44 PM

Another thing, order thrust plate bolts too. Just in case.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/22/10 06:58 PM

What are thrust plate bolts for? Prob a stupid question lol.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/23/10 02:43 AM

Please tell me your not doing the cam swap by yourself... lol not trying to be an ass but if your trying to do a cam in your car and you don't know where thrust plate bolts go to you really shouldn't be cracking that motor open.

lol. I love how the thrust plate is like 2 lines long in the write-up, but took me almost an entire day to do.

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/23/10 02:33 PM

Thrust plate is a round plate that holds the cam in the block. It has two bolts. I honestly can't remember if I replaced mine or not when I installed my cam. I'm thinking I didn't.

It's the bolts that are the problem. They strip out extremely easily because they are torqued down so tight and are a torx bit. The first one generally comes out easily, but the second one can be a PITA. (I had to dremel it out)

It's not something that I wanted to do at all, not around the cam/bearings. It all worked out in the end, but it was not a good time.

I hope you have some experienced help,I'm not trying to belittle you but there are many small details that can cause you problems later and have seen the results of overlooked things ,I hate to see you ruin a perfectly good engine ,but good luck and ask questions if in doubt I have done at least 6 rebuilds on the 3.8's and pulled at least 12 so any help you need just ask.And I have a set of stainless E-bay headers I could let you have at cost if you want $200 shipped.Chico(pops)

Are you gonna actually hang around for a while this time? Or walk off into the sunset again?

Re: When I pull my engine - 03/24/10 06:57 PM

It's so dashing to walk off into the sunset... devilsmile

It all depends on what I'm doing in life. I've been so busy with various things, even my GP has been neglected. But I've been visiting the boards a bit lately, I just don't say much. laugh
