Welcome aboard! - 05/01/02 12:00 PM

Hi all:

Boy did Yahoo suck! All those stupid ads and hard to follow threads. I had been meaning to do this for a long time now and finally got around to it.

I hope you all enjoy the new format.

No ads. usa

Sig pics. devilgrin

And much, much more.

I've only been thinking about this for like 2 years. I have no graphics or design skills, though, so if anyone hates the colors feel free to tell me so. Maybe I need to create an off-topic area?

Sort of correct. If you post, and you want the board to notify you via email when someone replies, that is optional here. Just click the appropriate checkbox when you post. This is for new posts only.

I will add a hack soon that allows you to be notified of ANY replies to ANY thread you participate in, whether you started the thread or not. I just need a few more days for that one.

Hope this helps.

I certainly hope not... I liked the email format the best. I often saved messages that contained good info over the years. Trying to do that same thing here is a royal pain in the backside.
Another reason is that I could forward the emails or read them from any pop program or re-route them to anywhere else... often to places that forbade internet access via browsers.

Recently OQCHP has also done the same thing. It was a fabulous first 3 days before things petered down to almost nothing. If that is an example of what is to happen here, its not going to be very promising unless people really pull together and post meaningful topic specific messages that are interesting to users.

Just my 2 cents ( and we all know the value of Canadian currency lately anyways).

Well, in here you can simply email yourself a link directly to the post of interest and save that in your email. Less bulk, and easier to search because you can give it any topic subject you want.

Plus this has a better, faster search and you can always refer back to it later. I'm not taking it down, so you will always have access to everything ever posted here.

This only works in topics where you post or flag, but doesn't apply to that new and interesting topic that someone else starts elsewhere. More or less, people are forced to come here to at the very least flag topics that catch their eye. That or miss a potentially good thread.

Yup. I felt the trade-offs were well worth it. Yahoo was slow, inefficient, and full of spam ads. This is much cleaner and we can share more here with the use of pictures and easier links. This is more friendly and community-like than Yahoo. I'm sorry you don't like it, Jerry, but this is the best way to go IMO right now. [Yin Yang]

Thinks us Grand Am Guys are allowed in here too? My wife's got a GTP as well..

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 11:21 AM

Hey Brian,

One more thing ...

If the search indexing does its stuff by text, I would like to suggest that we NOT allow people to list all their mods in the sig (unless they use a picture).

Listing mods in the sigs (using text) will only confuse the search engine.

This will also prevent people from getting 1 million hits returned when they search for more information on cold air intake or something / some mod that is relatively common.

Just an idea cheers

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 12:04 PM

well, I might as well post for the first time. It looks pretty good in my opinion, but I do like the email format too. I guess you can't please everyone, and this is better for a large amount of people. How many people subscribed to the GPML emails anyways?? Just curious.

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 12:53 PM

Chew,
I don't believe that anything in the sig will show up under search. I just tried it with things I know I have in my sig and got 0 results. Not sure though, just my $.02

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 01:43 PM

BAM .. in the mods list on profile. Can you set that field to accept a URL? I have a mods page on my site and would rather direct people there rather than to list them all in the profile. square

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 01:51 PM

I think Jeff's method (link to Mod or car page) is the best way.

Also takes up less space in each individual post, to boot thumbsup

It should accept one now - does it not?

Re: Welcome aboard! - 05/02/02 08:44 PM

OH you can type a URL in there but it wont hyper link it. Whomever opens your profile will then have to cut and paste in a broswer. This is in the modifications list section of the profile.
