exhaust...

I know this topic has been touched allot but , I recently got dumped, so I figured I’d make my self feel better by buying exhaust for my car? What would you guys recommend?

I think a lot of guys here run stock with flowmasters. I'd say get a quote on a custom setup and if it's less than SLP/GMPP, go for it. I think that's what I'll be doing with flowmasters.

From what Ive heard so far, the best way to go is a u-bend delete and flowmasters. IMO full aftermarket exhaust set-ups are way overpriced. Im just going to buy the parts and get a shop to do it.

I agree, I started down the path of a Borla Cat-Back but after looking around and listening to every sound bite on the net, I went with the Flowmaster 50's. Couldn't be happier and I get compliments/comments repeatedly. I strongly give it

40 series will produce a fair amount of drone. I'm thinking about changing to 50 series so I can get some decent tips.

Does anyone have any experience with the GMPP exhaust setup? I think it looks nice, and it runs magnaflow mufflers IIRC. I can't find sound clips of how it sounds (every clip I have found doesn't work or is an invalid link to enjoy

I bought the 04 GP tips to put on my car (I think it will look decent) i spoke with a local shop and they will fabricate a replacement for the u-bend and install the tips for 50 bucks. if i find the flowmasters i don't think it will be too expensive. This is the direction I’m going to go.

I was thinking about eventually getting the SLP header/high flow cat package and the SLP loudmouth catback exhaust, but I think I could probably get an exhaust shop to make a similar catback exhaust for way less. If I went that route, I'd probably go with Flowmaster 50 series muffs and 3.5" tips

Go to Ebay and find a store called Performance Peddler. They offer Flowmasters for the cheapest around. If you can, get a 3" DP and high flow cat to complement the FM. That's what I'm doing.

What's this about too much drone for you???

I don't like the Borla sound and the SLP LM is too much.

Drone is a low rumbleing sound inside the cabin. If you have it, you'll know it. If you don't have it, you won't know anything about it.

I know what drone is funny man.

And I've wanted to ask, would the 50s sound much different on a GT with an H pipe, or would the difference be so small it's not even worth noting? Thus far everything else is stock, but I believe by the time I get 50s, I'll have a K&N air filter and the Hedman tips from PFYC .. Yep.

Yeah a female talking about H pipes, and KN's and stuff is like a dream...and "she" has a car exactly like mine...

What can I say. Racing with most girls is cake; you gotta race the boys. I know women aren't usually interested in this, but I thought for sure I wasn't the only one here! Was I wrong?

And as much as I seem to think I know, it's nowhere near as knowledgeable as what I've seen in this board. It's intimidating, but I'm learning as I go. Have to start somewhere! Besides, I don't think I'll be as .. mm .. fanatic about it, since I have only a few things I'd like to do to my GP, but who knows. It might turn into an addiction! It always seems to go that way.

Now, about those 50s ..

I've been there myself except I broke up with her. Felt bad so I painted the scraches on my other car. Looks like a zebra now since the paint didn't match but I didn't care.

Seems 50 is the way to go. My biggest fear buying it and feeling drone and having a really loud car. But from what I hear from everyone, 50's don't give you that.

The 50 series is your best bet if you don't want drone in the cabin if you want Flowmasters.

I don;t know if the H pipe would make a difference over the Y. I would suggest asking Chico. He's the GT master.

About the 40 series, are we talking about the 2 chamber ones, or the new super 40's. They say ALOT less drone and better sounding, due to 3 chambers they say............

If that is true, than the 40 series must be awful. I am seriously considoring getting my super 40's taken off. They're driving me nuts.

so does anybody here that runs the 50s remove their resonator, or did everybody leave it there? I waas wondering what 50s without the res would sound like with the "drone factor" is it there? loud/soft, etc

Look up the vids from Canadian. Think he's going to try and post more vids over the weekend.

If there's too drone for you and no resonator, then just extend the tips at least an inch further than the rear bumper and it's good to go.

Refrain from snubbing me too much .. That hood is temporary at best. I work parttime at minimum wage while I attend classes, so I can't say I'm exactly rolling in the cash I need for that lovely Ram Air hood. Also, I am a noob. :p

And speaking of that hood, I've never seen one on an SE. Slick!

I took my dash apart and painted them. Put on that plastic paint, bout 4 coats. Had to take off some plastic pop rivets, but plastic welded it back together

Tell me about it, I'm in the same position. I've been looking at molding a WS6 scoop by US Exotics into the hood and coming up with something similar to ASCD's hood. Even if I bought a used hood to play with until it's done, I shouldn't be out much over $300 doing it myself. Ramair apparently doesn't do much for our cars performance wise, better off making the car look nicer and possibly making it a functional heat vent. As a side note, I'll refrain from criticization until you start putting Type R stickers or fart cans on it... then watch out!

I'll be looking forward to Canadian's vids as well. Should be interesting to see it with the 40 series examples.

ok guys, i got my tips in yesterday, so after work i ran down to my local muffler shop, I was planning on geting the 50 series but all they had in stock was 40's. I decided to go ahead with those. I had the u-bend replaced also. I like the result, looks and sound great!! i'll post before / after pics soon!!

The 40's are a popular choice around here. I have em and love em.

What exactly does the u-bend delete do? Never heard of that b4

There is a piece of pipe directly behind the cat that is bent down and back up in a U shape with an O2 sensor mounted top center. This restricts exhaust flow so most people have it cut off and standard pipe put in its place with a new bung for the O2 sensor to be reinstalled. I think it adds around ~5hp to a stock L67 setup.

Looks kinda odd, but I think I like it! I always wanted to know what those tips would look like on my car, and now I know. I wouldn't make them my first choice of tips, but they definitely look sweet.

How's the sound? The drone?

As for the exhaust, like everyones been sayin, flowmasters sound great on our gp's, "Love that sound!" if you want louder, with a bit of "drone" in the cabin, go with super 40 series or 40 series, if you just want a nice tone and to free up your exhaust a bit, get 50 series. If your gettin the whole exhaust redone I would recommend replacing your DP and headers and go flowmaster from there. Hope this helps.

Sound is nice, doesn’t sound like a go-kart,(which is what I didn't want) its deep enough for me!!!

Drone is not too bad, I wanted something that would still allow me to hear the supercharger, and this does that.

Also, today I added an intake, so that helps out some..

When shopping on Ebay try searching for "Gran Prix" and "Grand Pris" or "GrandPrix" - often people misspell our car name. They may not be able to spell, but they sometimes have good deals

Personally, I'm looking to get the GMPP exhaust setup, but sell the tips (they're a bit larger than will look good IMO)

Would leaving the u-bend on affect the sound of 50s on a GT? I'm getting someone to put the mufflers and tips on for free, and I might be pushing my luck asking them to do a u-bend delete, too ..

I don't think it'll have any effect on the sound of the exhaust, but having it removed is beneficial for the performance of the car.

Agreed. You can get a 4-8 hp increase if you do the U-bend delete.

If it's pushing your luck asking them for a freebie, ask them if they will do it for a small additional fee ($30 or so). I think most shops charge around $50-70 for the delete, so it would still be a good deal. I would consider it myself, but my cat is going bad (throwing SES light) so I might as well get a whole new downpipe assembly. Something else you might want to consider if your car has a lot of miles on it.

Also, me and the parts guy here are having a little disagreement. :p The pipe leading into the stock muffler is apparently 2", but from what I've seen of you GTPs, you run a 2.5" .. so there must be a difference in our exhaust? Could I still put 2.5"s on there somehow?

Also, the part numbers I have are varying more than I'd like them to .. Argh.

I thought the pipe was 2.25"? Anyway, it is possibile. He'd just put on an adapter to accomadate the difference.

Have you considered doing a 2.5" from the cat back??? It would help as well since you're doing some exhaust work.

The exhaust has a few different diameters. All I remember is the stock mufflers have a 2 1/2 inch outlet. If you keep the stock piping you'll need a reducer to mount Flowmaster Mufflers because they don't make a 40 series center in offset out with a small enough inlet.
