Choosing right size tires

Choosing right size tires - 05/09/02 01:44 PM

Hi, I'm new here but you all seem very knowledgable and experienced. I'm trying to decide on Tires and Sizes for my GTP. I have 17" rims with 245/45ZR17 yokohama A520 tires currently. I know these tires are shorter than the stock setup and I was wondering what people think about 255/45/17's and 245/50/17's I know 245/50/17 is a perfect match to stock but there isn't much available. For tires I want the new Bridgestone SO3 Pole-position or RE730's, neither are made in 245/50/17. what do you guys think?

Thanks Brian

I have 255/45/17s but had to get the inner lips of the rear wheel wells cut to keep from rubbing. Some people get them rolled. 245/45/17 isnt all that bad though.

I have 245/45/17 and they are perfect. I have the RE730's. You have to remember that the RE730 Is a pretty big tire regardless.

Shag Finger, Is yours lowered? do you think that size would still fit if it was? I think that there is too much gap in the fender wells with the 245/45/17 but I do plan on getting lowering springs so I'm sure that would help.

No its not lowered...

Chris....how is it a big tire? Sizes are sizes that is why they have them. I am confused by your statement confused confused

It just seems like they have a lot of tread. Compared to other 45 series tires I seen, they just look bigger, maybe I'm just goin crazy.... [Rotate]

Since I've had 17s, I have run through 2 sets of different size tires.

255/45/17 Firestone SZ50 <<< AWESOME summer only tire. Thumbs up if you live in a no snow / ice area. 9/10 points overall, IMHO.

245/45/17 Dunlop SP5000 great all season tire. Although not particularly excellent at any one thing. 7/10 points, IMHO.

The 245/45/17 is slightly over 3% speedo error, while the 255/45/17 is slightly under 3%.

Most tire guys will recommend not going over 3% because you may affect your gearing and you will affect your odometer readings at that point.

I'm wondering more how they look. I like the size I have now (245/45/17) but there is more to be desired. Have you seen the new Bonnevilles with 235/55/17 thats a sweet looking rim/tire combo. has anybody done that size?

Also what have people thought about the BFG g-force KDW any likes or dislikes.

I heard they were a pretty decent tire. Not the best tire in the world, but no where near the worst. Haven't really heard anything bad about them. usa

What about the kuhmo ecsta in 245/50/17. They are fairly cheap, I think they are the cheapest out of all the 17's. If anyone has them, how do they perform?

While we're on the topic of tire sizes I'll just add my $.02 here. I just purchased some Enkei RS5 17x7's and fitted them with Michelin Sport A/S 245/50/17 tires. Whoa! These tires rock, and have renewed my (existing) faith in Michelin's.

I was thinking about going with 18in' rims. would that mess with the camber? what tires sizes are recommened for 18in rims? my car is not currently lowered
thanks

If you go with 18's 245/45/18 is very close to stock diameter and there are lots of options for tires. What rims are you looking at? I think that the KMC Tramp is a cool looking wheel and American Racing's new chrome AR touring looks great.
