WS6 Hood

WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 01:36 PM

Hood got painted, is on car, and they are fitting it but it didn't come with a latch, and cannot use the stock one because it is welded to the stock hood. What would I go about using for the latch? This is more of a question for Tbat considering hes got the same hood, wondering if his came with a latch or if these aftermarket hoods come with latches.

hood pins?

or cut the old latch off of the old hood?

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 01:54 PM

The hood is fiberglass, holding down with just hood pins is bad idea and said it could crack. The body shop wants a latch for it to secure it down so when it leaves the shop they feel good that the hood wont fly up and cause damage to my vehicle. The guy from the shop wants me to order the hood pins but were all stuck on what were going to use for a latch and waiting to hear from extreme dimentions (extremley stupid) tech support. So we'll see I guess im going to Napa to get some hood pins.

No don't I'm sure there is a way. I'm pretty sure Tbat didn't use pins.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 02:28 PM

That still doesn't help me, the hood's been painted, the hoods on the car, and the company said they'd get me some info on the latch but the guy at body shop reccomends i get hood pins...what do you all think?

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 02:43 PM

Well currently at the moment there the only ones who can get me a latch for the hood, and as every day passes the rental car payments keep rising. I'm looking for a latch that will fit the hood.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:13 PM

Can't you just go to the junkyard and grind off a latch and weld it on the new hood?

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:24 PM

u can't weld metal to fiberglass.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:32 PM

The hood was suppose to come with a latch and they cannot send me a latch because they only make them with the hood so i'd have to return the hood (its been painted already).

There is hope though, I got them to send me free hood pins overnight to me for the missing latch so the hood will be put down with hood pins (not my prefered choice) but the cost of the rental car per day is adding up and I cannot afford to have my car in shop for them to find an answer.

The body shop said that any other latch that they could try to make wouldn't happen cause there tech guys there wernt wanting to be reliable for having the hood fly open on me, however are allowing the hood pins because they feel its the safest way to get it down. This is very discomforting for me though aswell considering the hood is fiberglass and its going to be held down by pins, this could cause bouncing of the hood possibly and could cause the hood to crack so im not 100% happy but I'll have to live for my aftermarket hood choice.

I know! But I was thinking that your hood now was just one from a used WS6 and the latch had broke off. Didn't know it was brand new? ....my bad!

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:43 PM

how do u have an oversight like not putting the latch in before laying some more fiberglass over it?...

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:43 PM

Yup Taz its a brand new fiberglass WS6 hood. Hood pins i hope will be enough.

What do you mean by that?

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:45 PM

Put some high density foam over the pin so when you close the hood it will crush the foam and keep the hood from vibrating. Also make sure the hood pis have a nice wide grommet to go through. The wide grommet will spread out the pressure more evenly and help protect from cracks. You can also have the shop epoxy a piece of aluminum under the hood where the pins go through so it will better distribute the stress to the hood lessening the chances of cracks.

If the hood was suppose to ship with the latch already in and it didn't and they won't take it back I'd demand more then just the free hood pins.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 04:48 PM

not you, the company that made the hood.

im guessing that the hood latch is laid on the hood and then more fiberglass and resin is laid overtop of that so the latch is basically "one with the hood", its not welded or bolted on or anything.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 05:28 PM

Called both Extreme Dimentions, and Andy's Auto Sport and they are telling me that I cannot get a discount on the hood or anything because the hood pins "fix" the problem.

So basically I've learned that I shall never purchase anything from Extreme Dimensions, and I wasn't really expecting Andy's autosport to give me a discount considering they are just the people who give the order to extreme dimenions. So if I were you guys stay away from Extreme Dimentions products.

The reason for not supplying me with a new latch is because the latches are seperate from the fiberglass, they are bolt on and they are manufactured overseas and they cannot get me the latch or equivlant latch for the WS6 Hood.

So I totally got ripped off, I could have them send me a new hood but then I would have to charge for labor and paint fees again and not to mention the chance of not having a latch considering the guy @ extreme dimensions told me that all the hoods they had in stock had no latches. They have not put any warning on there site which sickens me to see that someone else will run into the same issue.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 05:36 PM

Why did'nt the bodyshop notice the lack of any latch while testfitting and painting? you could use an epoxy to attach the latch but I would add hood pins to be safe,I have had a hood fly up on me it was a tricky situation it did'nt fly off it just flattened back virtually blinding me I managed stop but it was a tad scary!

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 05:40 PM

I'm not exactly sure why they didn't notice a lack of a latch, they were more focused on getting it painted and then onto the car. I even had the body shop contact them and they said the same exact thing to me and are shipping out the free hood pins. It's better then nothing and I suppose when I get some money i can get some blue locking ones to match my theme.

I just hope no one goes about ordering a WS6 hood from Extreme Dimensions.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:09 PM

you have to check stuff when you get it. I know that hindsight is 20/20, but this could have been avoided. I would be disappointed that the bodyshop overlooked this, also.

Lessons learned, though.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:20 PM

I had the hood shipped to the body shop, They painted it by the time I got to see it and noticed the latch was gone. Basically it coulda atleasted been returned but as you say avoided..I dont think so. Atleast if I was to get a new hood it couldn't of been avoided, if I were to keep it stock, yes.

I have learned from this though dont get me wrong. Im regretting the aftermarket hood now, but I suppose I may not when I actually get to drive my car and check it out first hand.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:24 PM

do u have any pics?

cant they bond the metal latch to the bottom of the hood with some resin and fiberglass sheets. when i was in highschool thats how we bonded the mounts for the control surfaces on an aircraft wing we built for aviation science class.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:26 PM

I'll get some pics, maybe I should try taking to a diffrent shop to see what they can do?

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:29 PM

cause if they do it right and spread out the stress well that would work. fiberglass is very strong when used correctly and that might work but im no expert.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:44 PM

you would need a few sheets of fiberglass and that would add thickness, your hood might not latch properly. go with the hood pins, they are tried and true.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 06:48 PM

Hood pins it is anyways for the time being. If any issues arise with them I will get a latch made.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 07:18 PM

Aren't the stock latches bolted onto the hood? I remember palsut was able to unbolt the latch and add spacers to his hood.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 07:21 PM

Nope, welded.
Posted by: 98greenGT

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 07:37 PM

I could have sworn they were bolted in, maybe it's just his F1 hood that's bolted.

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 08:33 PM

my sd is bolted. stock is welded

Re: WS6 Hood - 09/09/08 10:58 PM

Yes, mine is bolted. That's suck about your little problem. I was looking forward to see galaxy silver WS6 hood. I couldn't believe body shop didn't test it to put it on your car. Just paint it then put it on your car but it doesn't work out. Then you got screwed. Good luck and hopefully you will get problem solve.
