Loss of oil and lots - 01/17/12 03:12 PM

so my car isnt leaking it or if it is its burning it. i have replaced the pcv valve done a compression test all checked out fine were all pretty close i also for some time put a piece of cardboard underneath the car and not a single drip i can easily get a low oil light halfways through oil changes depending on how ive driven and i called for recalls and stuff and there are none so is it the valve cover? ive heard they leak i cant really see the rear but the front is clean

Punctuation, dude.

Have you thought of the LIM? Oil sending unit? Front main? Rear main? Oil pan? Front cover? Leaking oil drain plug or oil filter? There's a BUNCH of things it could be, also to include bad o-rings on the filler tube. Happened to me back in 04.

Is your coolant a milky brown colour or still bright orange (or green if you put in prestone)?

Have you checked under the car? The oil could be getting slung all along the bottom of the car if the leak is from the front main seal or even from the oil filter neck, oil pressure switch etc. These would only leak when the car is running/driving so you wouldn't necessarily see leaks on the driveway or cardboard.

Also, it could be puddling in the subframe.

Take a look under the car first on the passenger side. These are the likely spots of leaks.

had my car up on a lift almost 3 weeks ago and the bottom of the car is clean the only place where there is a trace of oil except for a few spots on bottom of engine but not 3 quarts worth

Then you are burning it. Valve stem seals, head gasket or piston rings.

Or one of your valve covers are leaking and burning off the exhaust manifold.

With that much oil being burned, I'm guessing head gasket.

What does your coolant look like?

will check coolant tomorrow and get back to you guys and just wondering if it was coolant wouldnt it be over heating or anything cause if thats the case then thats not it cause it always runs at 180. i checked plugs and all are clean, so im guessing that rules out the piston rings.

How much is a gasket for the valve covers? might as well replace it just to have that ruled out for a while

Valve cover gaskets are cheapest through ZZP I believe. Cheaper than Rockauto IIRC.

We're not asking if your coolant is low, we're asking you to check it to see if your oil is mixing with your coolant. This would indicate a head gasket leak. Check it to see if it's milky brown or still bright orange/green.

If you don't want to wait, you can also pick them up from a parts store. Although it will probably be more expensive.

My 225k mile GTP was doing a quart every 200 miles, now it uses zero. We did the Oil Pan, Main Seal, and the biggest culprit the Oil Pressure Sending Unit.

alright is there a write-up on the oil pressure sending unit change?

It's the O2 sensor-looking thing just above the crankshaft pulley. You need a special socket to pull the oil sending unit. Talk to your local parts house and they'll point you in the right direction.
