Engine temp light comes on and off

Today after I was done driving I noticed that my coolant TEMP light was on and the gauge was at normal temp. Took a quick look at my manual and it said that either my Coolant had overheated or my radiator fans had stopped working. I first checked the fuses and both were fine. On my drive home the light was off most of the time but the needle was saying right at 185 which its normally below that. The temp light would blink on and off a few times and then was off most of the time. Any thoughts why it would come on and off?

Is there air in the system? Is the chemistry good? What's the t-stat looking like?

Have you figured it out? We encountered almost the same problem on a truck due to the faulty temp sensor.
