The old question. Mainly preference i guess but what do u think is better!

I voted turbo, performance mainly + hearing the blow off valve. heaven

I think better is a relative term.

As far as performance goes, I believe turbos are better.

But a supercharger has its own advantages as well as a way cooler sound. I went with the supercharger.

given the fact of the supercharger being a factory option and being available at a much cheaper price than the turbo makes a tough arguement...price being equal I prefer the turbo...but if you like the sound and instant low end power then the blower is the ticket. I personally think the turbo offers the best comprimise between fuel mileage, power and drivablity.

S/C. I like the whine, the instant power, and I DESPISE the sound of the blow off valve on turbos. Just my opinion, but it sounds...I dunno, weak, or something. Anytime I hear one, I want to go race the guy with it and kick his ***.

I prefer S/Cs. Instant torque is off the hook. Plus I'm a gear head so seeing that big chunk of metal sitting on top of an intake just screams power.

Im not gonna debate which is better cause they both have their place.

There are S/Cs out there that will net more power then a turbo but unfortunately they are too big to adapt to the 3.8L

Though I voted for supercharger, my project is leading me towards getting a turbocharger. Reason being, ChrisG recently sent me a video on youtube of the legendary Grand Prix Turbo and had me thinking. I want to turbo this car and do minor visual upgrades to keep its factory look. I want to build this car up as if Pontiac actually built a turbo GP in 2000. So there it is guys, thats what I am going for. I haven't come up with a name to replace GT, but I may try to find the old Grand Prix Turbo Badges and slap em on when the car receives the turbo...

lol i would just go to autozone and pick up some chrome badges that say turbo but it get rid of the sleeper affect. If they know what you are running its just not as fun when u smoke em!!!

For what it's worth, I've had the pleasure of driving a lot of cool, fast cars over the years; turbocharged, supercharged, even a couple of nitrous fed LS7s. Guess I don't really have a preference; as long as I'm enjoying the ride, it's all good! thumbsup

For what it's worth I have not had the pleasure of driving a lot of cool fast cars over the years, but i have drivin old skool e30 bmw's, a crappy 5.0 stang (i hate stangs), a v6 camaro (camaros are my life), a 528i, chevy malibu, nissan maxima, 5speed escort, an audi a6, a grand am, trailblazer, grand cherokee, and many other fine or crappy vehicles. w.e the vehicle is, i still enjoy driving them, so I must agree with you on your statement

While on the subject on turbo's could anyone suggest at what mileage would be to high for a turbo? OR as long as you keep good maintenance your does it really matter? Because my next major mod I want is a turbo?

Turbo is a bad idea on a car with that many miles. I wish I had lower miles on my car with all the crap I have done because I keep breaking stuff.

I second drummerboy on this. I've got 120k on the clock and I'm just starting to see some tranny problems.

Right now, the front end feels kinda spongey under light acceleration, kinda like something connected to the steering is a lil loose. Slight wiggle in the steering wheel too.

Man i shouldn't of thrown him onto the idea of the turbo. I didnt put into consideration how many miles he already had. Since i only have 59k i am all for it but hey we all do what we do for a reason!

lol yea chris it is all your fault for gettin me onto this idea...but I'm looking to replace the old with the new from plugs and wires, to cams and trannies. I'll do w.e I can to be sure that this engine is ready to take the turbo. I'm not just gonna bolt up a turbo and say ok look at me I have a turbo grand prix. Like I said this is going to be a long process but I'm ready for it. But Thank You for the warning drummmerboy and lonezergling, it is much appreciated.

yea I know...like i said, i'm not gonna bolt it up and say hey i got this turbo with all this power because then my engine could blow up or something. It'll probably be a year or so before I'm ready to hook up a turbo anyway, so in the meantime I will prep it

That, and you can use any intercooler available, instead of just the wimpy shortstack IC. Since everything is stock parts, you buy stuff just like if you had an L67 from the factory. I couldn't agree more Zerg cheers

Whipple's with stock heads and cam run like high 11's/low 12's IIRC. Pretty amazing results for one mod.

I say super.
While turbos have taken our car furthest, its a matter of preference of feel.
I've seen people complain about how their turbo 3.8 drives on the street. Sure, slam the pedal and it will haul ass (almost a second later) but I guess some people aren't happy with light-medium driving.
I just like the instantaneous feel of a supercharger. I can roll into the throttle and feel the instant response.

I see what you're saying, but unless you are a hardcore racer, that one second won't really matter. You won't have a daily driver that runs a 9 sec quarter mile.

Besides, isn't that car twin turbo? Because if it is, of course two turbos will beat one supercharger. crazy lol

I mean, if you like the turbo, that's cool. I'm just saying, for a daily driver, it's not TONS better than a s/c, IMO.

actualy nothing has been done to it...YET. its there for a DD but im gonna cut the cat soon. i have a little no name turbo in my garage im thinking about haveing a little fun with. but i keep telling my self the bu is a DD.

i might do that fake turbo and let you guy know how Durrrrrr it is.

if he is seriously considering a turbo, then i hope he plans on going pretty far modding. No one can do just a turbo and stop.

Turbos are way more efficient, and have the potential to do way more. M90's with smaller pulleys have way less efficiency, since they get so hot.

This honestly isnt a debate, it all depends on how far he plans on going with the car. if he has the $ go turbo, the potential is amazing. The M90 will hit a wall first. You will spend a lot more money to get an m90 car into the 12/11 range then you will a turbo

I started this poll just to see what ppl preferred. Yes the Turbo is much better performance wise, but they both have there ups and downs...

Turbo's are much more efficient and suffer far less parasitic loss since they are run off the exhaust gases, instead of being turned by the crank.

Expanding off what ordonez said, an M90 with a 2.55" pulley is taking probably 60-80 hp to spin the blower. So there is a much earlier breaking point to where the gains are overcome by the losses, and with a turbo that's point is a much higher threshold

thats where mine will differ. Every remembers the clean yet sleeper look of the 1990 Grand Prix STE Turbo, which was a 4 door GP with the same turbo as the 2 door (Only 1,000 were built). Thats my plan, a subtle lookin yet fast Grand Prix Turbo to give it the legendary feel of the late turbo grand prix.

The M112 is not the Whipple.

Nor is the M112 the same thing as a GenV M90.

Whipple is an aftermarket company. No cars come with Whipple cahrgers. I believe our whipple is the WX40B or something.

The M112 is a larger displacement blower. Are there and M112 kits for our cars BTW Herc? Not that I'm interested, I'm just curious.

And the GenV M90 is just a redesigned GenIII with little things like smaller silencer slots and other things to make it more efficient.

Then we get into turbos like the Turbonetics 62-1 and T70.

Yes. You can get an M90/112 hybrid through Overkill. It was originally a ZZP or Intense product that they sold the rights to. Anyway, it combines the two blowers so they will fit and still give you more boost without creating as much heat.

i heard that there wasnt much gain from the M112. It really isnt that much of a mod. I think the whipple could be a HUGE step foward for the 3800 community, but they just havent worked out all the bugs yet.

Magnuson makes an MP112 which is an improved eaton M112.
For bigger engines / V8's, the M112 and MP112 are able to make higher boost levels than the M90. Dunno about on the 3.8's. Apparently genV M90 is the way to go since plenty of people have done it.

do ressearch first. Make sure it is what you want.

The GenV blows the m112 out of the water. and if you can get a whipple to work right, that is the way to do it

That sounds about right. The M112 has such a large displacement, our engines jsut don't have the kind of power to make those larger rotors worth the work.

M112 is not a good upgrade for our cars. I don't even think there's a kit for it.

GenV is what you want.

Also, if you look at the top FWD quarter mile times, theres an M112 guy way ahead of any of the gen V's (John Tsimaras, Magnuson MP112 & N20,

Plenty of genIII and genV M90's, not to mention most serious turbo setups, use N20. Especially to combat that turbo lag.
