One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 10/28/07 03:02 AM

Ok first off...im really inexperienced in the engine world and tuning world as many of you know. But im no amature to racing. My buddy Just got an 01' Mustang GT. You know..bug V8 with a 5-speed manual tranny. Hes got a full megna flow setup with a full cold air. Pretty loud car. Well we were at a top light and we both went for it. I took him up till my 2nd gear...and he SLOWLY pulled away as he gunned it after each shift of the mustangs heavy clutch. Well...with all thoes mods...you would figure a 3.8 V6 with a short ram would'nt have a chance? Well...dont know if any of you care abiout this story...but makes me smile thinkng about how hard Ford can try...but will never be a Pontiac. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

red light to red light its fun to race a rustang, but it sucks on the interstate, those extra pistons are hard to keep with

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 10/28/07 11:54 AM

The mustang is cool but alot of mustang drivers are sleeping on the Grand Prix that is why I like it so much. And after seeing what can been done with enough money and time a grand prix could probably keep up and even beat a mustang.

yeah msutangs are way overated. my buddy just got done swappig a poliece v8 ( 5.0) engine out of a grand maquee into his 3.8 mustang he put a nice trany in it to.
well last night was my gfs homecoming and i was driveing my grandpas 2001 silverado 1500hd crew cab, he never got by me smile and its only got a magnaflow muffler and a k&n fipk intake.
its probly an 18+ second truck he only got to my rear passager door from 0- 95

dont forget the Monte's! My Z is great! my friend was shocked when i took him in his Fox body. a built 302 full exhaust, cam, IM and carb.

the best thing is all the suspension too. once the road gets twisty it still got what it takes. and no body suspects it!

As an owner of both a 03 Grand Prix and a Mustang 5.0, I will tell you the 5.0 will smoke the GP any day, anytime. Give your buddy some time to learn how to drive it, and go for it again. I bet he spun the crap out of the tires in first gear. Hopefully he has done smart mods to it, and not mods that counter each other. My 92 Convertible 5.0 with 130K, stock motor, cat back exhaust and slight gear change ran a 14.0 at 98.

Dude, I'm not dogging your car, as I own one, all I'm saying is, 99% of V-8 cars will eat your lunch.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 10/29/07 12:14 PM

all things driver being the same (weight, experience, fatigue, health) between a pony GT and a GP GTP stock, wouldnt the stang have the GP due to power:weight ratio? Our cars are right about 3500 lbs. Arent the Stangs just a touch under 3k?

What kind of net gains can you acheive with equal amounts of money spent? Say...give the both pony and GTP 5 large...who can get the most performance gains?

I understand that perfect conditions like these mostly NEVER exist, but humor me.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 10/29/07 01:51 PM

With 5 grand, I would say the Mustang. With 5 grand in a Gp you could get Cam, heads, intercooler, and not to bad tranny. And run high 12s low 13s with something like 300-350WHP. With s stang and 5 grand you can throw a wipple kit on it and put out 450RWHP and run 12s. I beleve when I was looking at Mustangs with 5 gradn you can get the rouch stage 2 kit and it says it iwll give you 425-450RWHP. Now with equal everything (driver wise) I would say Stang.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 10/29/07 06:56 PM

You say he has an 2001 R mustang. Are you sure? Ford made a 2001 Cobra R which listed over $50K. There was no such R model in 02. They make a Gt and a Cobra. No stangs are not under 3000 pounds. Most V-8 cars are about 3400, V-6 cars about 3200.
Below specs are taken from Car & Driver or Road & Track
2001 Mustang GT 3240 lbs, 260 HP, 302 TQ
0-60 in 5.5 1/4 mile 14.1
2001 Mustang Cobra 3430 lbs, 320 HP, 312 TQ
0-60 in 4.8 1/4 mile in 13.5
I could not find specs for a GT so here is a GTP
2001 GTP 3428 lbs 0-60 6.8 1/4 mile 15.1

Also, remember how flat a TQ curve is on a V-8 compared to a V-6, and how soon it reaches it peak.

Here would be my under $5K build.

AFR heads $1400, performance engine rebuild with N2O cam $600, 125 HP N20 $500, 3.73 rear gears $200, custom tune $200, fiberglass hood $300, clutch $300 and low 12 sec pass on the bottle, high 12s with no bottle, with lots of cash left.

OR stock motor, paxton supercharger $2800, clutch $300, 373 gears $200 low 12s

This discussion could go on forever. Face it, we all bought a GP for a reason, if it was because we wanted the fastest car out there, we were wrong. I bought mine cause the $$ was right and I liked it. No it is not fast like my chevelle, mustang or VTX, but it gets 28 mpg+ on highway trips and carrys three kids to school with backpacks and music instruments.

Just stay safe out there and enjoy lining up every so often with other cars. It is all fun and games til someone gets hurt.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 11/10/07 11:31 PM

Hmmm.. I never even thought about having a go at a Moustang GT. Just makes common sense that cars of a similar weight, but the the Ford having about an extra 85 horsepower, why bother being embarassed?

Now if I had a supercharger & a few mods, that might be a different story.

My favorite lunches are Camry and Accord V6s, Civics with a coffee can exhaust.

When I want to go out Mustang GT hunting, I climb in the Malibu. C'mere, horsey.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 11/11/07 12:37 AM

So much hating.

Saying 99% of V8s would eat us is a huge stretch. A GT, yes. A GTP, no. No one said they were the fastest thing on earth, but we do need to get a little credit, since the V8 bigdogs like to take it so much. And stock for stock, it's a mostly fair game for an underrated car like the GP. Don't throw mods in the mix, it only makes for flamebait, be reasonable.

Besides, the power gap between V8 and V6 nowadays appears to be shrinking. There are multiple V6s now that approach and exceed 300HP with no forced induction. It's a grayer line than it used to be.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 11/13/07 05:55 PM

As the previous owner of a 2003 GT with 3.79 gears and full Mac exhaust, I can tell you that unless the person doesn't know how to shift the mustang, its going to be quite hard to beat one no matter what pully you got in it...not saying GPs suck by any measure, I love mine!, its just hard to compare the two performance wise unless the GP has a lot of engine mods.
Posted by: 72chevman

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 11/13/07 06:43 PM

Thanks Chunkee for having my back. It is my experience that the average Mustang driver (18-25) 1. Can not afford good tires 2. Has not learned to launch and drive correctly 3. Thinks that spinning and smoking tires is cool. I learned how to launch my chevelle and mustang to where my tires hardly spin off the line and then chirp here and there at the top of 1st and then chirp again as I hit 2nd gear.

As for what 20GTP02 asked. My comment is, who is going to post "my GT or GTP got beat by a Mustang"?
In my years at the race track I noticed one particular trend. A better driver trumps a better car, and a better set up car makes a beter driver. Automatics make a better more consistent car.

As for Bill Bradley, my 110K mile stock 302 with mufflers and short throw shifter, smoked a new 2004 Monte SS non S\C (wife's car with exhaust, CAI, PCM) and a co-worker Josh's 03 Monte SS S\C with exhaust. I barely pulled on a stock 2005 Grand Prix GXP (Cliff's) with the 5.3l V-8
But again, this post will go on forever, ever car is different and so are road and track conditions.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 11/13/07 06:51 PM

I'm not gonna lie...i hate fords...mustangs are the best thing that ford did...but still not a huge fan. a guy in one of my classes is selling an 89 5.0 gt 5 speed stang. I've ACTUALLY considered buying it(selling price of $500) thought about it so much my head hurts. Stock 5.0 only put out like 220 horses. The only up side i've seen to buying it is two more cyclinders, a 5 speed, and RWD. plus i figure i could put 1500 into it and sell it to some mustang crazy kid for 4 or 5 grand...lol

I am very ashamed of admitting this to everyone... no

But just to put in my .02, there are way to many variables to consider when comparing two cars. Some guys GP might beat a few mustangs up, and then one dudes mustang could eat some gp's up. theres just so much to consider...i don't even wanna try and compare. BUT as far as looks go...GP ALL THE WAY!!! lol

this is a never ending battle......1/4 mile gp and stang are pretty close depending on mods....but top end, those extra cylinders will take command, its mainley how well the driver can shift, ive lost some and won some when it comes to that, most of my losses where on the interstate.

im brining back the stang and gp battle....just because of what happend yesterday when me and my buddies went to the mall the other day, it was a 45 minute drive anyways: it was a 2000-something not the new ones, i dont know what the heck it was because it had a cobra emblem on the side and saleen stickers all over it, i think it was just a confused gt, it looked nice though. he was in front of my and i flew bye him and made sure he heard my blower squeel, then he turned off the road, about ten minutes later he ended up behind me, i seen he front end lift so i knew he was trying to pass me, so i romped it when he got to my rear bumper and he stayed right next to me, never passed, then he backed off, it was funny, i dont think it was a cobra he would have smoked me, and i didnt hear a chrger under his hood.......good times

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 06/04/08 02:21 PM

If I may say something, I can honestly say I do not like how Mustangs from about 1985 to 2004 drive or feel, and I was not impressed by anything but the power. I drove a 1985 Mustang GT with a carbed. 302 with a 351 speced cam (which made it pretty quick...) and it was nice to drive, but I kept noticing something, besides the overly light steering, everytime I hit a bump, I felt the rear end wiggle a bit. Well, I thought that was just worn out bushings and dimissed the issue, and figured, what the hell, if I can buy it, I can fix that easy enough. Fast forward to me being back here, and I drove a friend's 2004 Mustang GT, which I didn't like how it drove even more than the 85, even though the chassis felt more solid. The reason I didn't like it? Well, besides the fact that the shifter gate was turned slightly toward the driver (why Ford did that is beyond me) and I kept missing 3rd, but it still had that little wiggle in the rear end after hitting a bump. I have been in a few Camaros, and not a single one of those had this issue. But, it goes to prove a few points about Ford, 1, they put WAAAAY too much money into the F150 pickups, and 2, that Ford should have killed off that chassis in the 90's, instead of trying to band-aid the chassis all those years. The Grand Prix, in my opinion, is more fun to drive than the 'stang because it handles well, and its quick enough, though, I do have plans to do alot more to my GP soon, if I can.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 06/04/08 04:31 PM

You miss the point. The Mustang is still in production and the Camaro isn't. The Mustang sold (at a lower price point) and made profits, the Camaro didn't. Ford milked the design and put as little money into it as possible, which allowed them to reap profits out of the existing platform. The Camaro, while it might have had a better suspension, was more expensive and didn't sell well.

Also, the V6 are the sellers. V8s are just the cream whipping on top.

Re: One small Reason GP's make Mustangs look like little girls. - 06/04/08 05:37 PM

I still think the killing of the Fbody was more out of spite to the factory in Canada then anything but they plan on building them in Canada again so who knows. Obviously I don't lol. I do know GM wanted to move production to the states but they were running into roadblocks of somekind. I think Union related something like Fbodies will be built by these guys in plant X. GM wanted to make em in Plant Y and when people wouldn't budge GM kills the Fbody to do what they want and stick it to the Union. Low sales were just a good excuse.

I've never driven a stang so I really can't comment on em just know the numbers are out there and people either love em or hate em.

Sounds like some 18 year old backwards hat wearing kid got ebay happy with stickers. Most guys I know with a Saleen keep it stock except for maybe wheels, as it is worth more that way. If it had Saleen stickers all over it, it was probably a standard GT with all the wrong bolt ons and ebay parts promising 20 HP each.

Power depends on the years. Most before '99 were dogs unless you modded them, especially the fox bodies.

03 cobras are the $#!+... hands down...

my friend has one and that thing was the funnest thing i've ever driven...

i mean i love my GP and everything but i guess i just haven't been too impressed with the power... even boosted ones...

like i rode in steve's and it just didn't seem that much faster than mine... even though it def. is... it might have helped if i would have driven it though...

It's the mechanics of FWD vs RWD. When you accelerate, the RWD will sling you back in your seat.

Gearing.

That too I guess. It might be more interesting with a 5spd. My Stratus is FWD and only 200hp, but with the low gearing and manual is pulls and feels faster than the GP. But the speedo just doesn't move as fast. smile

I do have new found respect for the current Mustangs. Horsepower TV got one to 378HP and I believe 380Ib/Ft of torque on a chassis dyno without supercharging it. They did cheat a bit though, the 4.6 was stroked to 5.0. They fit it with Eibach springs and nice wheels and tires and made a nice handling and fairly quick car. I have yet to drive the current Mustang, but I want to give one a try, though, I wont lie, I am no Ford fan.
