New Intake! - 12/01/08 09:51 PM

Finally .. i went out tonight and bought these parts .. its simple with instructions and boy .. i can't be happier!! The idle sounds nice, when i punch it 1) i can definitely feel the engine breathing easier, and 2 ) i love the sound. Here are some pics smile

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:03 PM

I dont wanna burst your bubble, but that's really not a good setup. It's not bad, and will probably be better than stock, but why would you use a 90* bend and a reducing coupler?
Posted by: ShavedGPGT

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:06 PM

cut the elbo and get some PVC and make it a FWI
Posted by: 01GTshaner

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:11 PM

Shaved - is the FWI you're referring to like in your photobucket album ??

I dont find this setup to be a problem, anything is better than stock and my air filter was dirty .. like it was nasty. And for my first performance mod, doing it by myself, i went with one of the guides on this site, which said to use the parts i have.

Also i'm not really looking for THE best .. i mean its my first time doing things as well so, i'm pleased, but you're entitled to your opinion smile

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:16 PM

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. It isn't bad at all. A 45* bend with thicker ID tubing would be much better.

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:35 PM

how big is the filter?
how much did it cost you in total?
Looks cool BTW good job cheers

the filter i bought for my setup i built is adaple one 3"- 4" Something like that

please give more detail on how to drill your Ait sensor. smile
Posted by: 01GTshaner

Re: New Intake! - 12/01/08 10:51 PM

TBH I'm not 100% sure on the size of the filter , but the end is 3" as it fits into the 3" elbow snug.
cost me about 45$, the filter costing about 29.

I jsut drilled a single hole which clearly wasn't big enough, i than drilled a second hole beside it, and using a sharp knife i cut it to make a square hole kinda and it fits snugly int:)

What you could do is get a 60 degree elbow at 3inches or bigger and keep the intake tubing nice and wide for maximum airflow.

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 01:11 AM

So i'm upset now .. for the odd reason, my coupler is having a hard time staying attatched to the throttle body! It doesn't fall off completely but it seems the butterfly clamps are tight enough to hold it but aren't gripping enough rubber or something on both sides to hold it in place permanently! Is a new coupler in need or whats the issue here !!! My coupler i used is 4" x 3 "
Posted by: StreetShaker

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 01:32 AM

You need a THREE INCH!!!!!!!!!! Straight coupler. That means 3"x3". And then get a 3" 45* bend and you will be golden.
Posted by: Zalfrin

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 08:55 AM

x2 with the other comments, that is a small piece of PVC, you really need to match the intake tubing to the size of the intake as much as possible, and keep the bends to an absolute minimum.
Posted by: AustinGTP

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 09:14 AM

What's the purpose of the clamp around the tubing where the filter connects to the tubing?
Generally the filter slips on the outside of the tubing and the clamp goes around the filter, securing the filter around the tubing.
You've got the filter going inside the tubing with the clamp around the tubing.
Is the clamp really doing anything with it around the tubing instead of the filter being around the tubing then the clamp on the filter?

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 10:01 AM

The Coupler i have is 4x3 and the PVC is a 3" 45* like the instructions said too !

I'll get new piping today and go from there .. so a 3x3 coupler and a minimum bend (preferably 60*) PVC is my best bet?
Posted by: r.s.hutchinson

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 10:55 AM

Dude, I have a PVC FWI pipe you can have. All you need is a 3" coupler to connect it to your tb.

The one end is for a 4" filter but I can fix that to make it fit a 3".

I'll have to get you some pics.

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 11:04 AM

Its alright hutch .. with some elbow grease and some engine oil lol, i got a 3x3 coupler and all is well. it stays on just fine and sounds nice smile

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 12:22 PM

yea that cone filter should be over the PVC pipe not in it.....that metal clamp over the PVC is doing nothing to secure it on there.....sometimes its a very tight fir to get it over but some spit and a flat head will help....or that cone will fall out when you hit a hard bump in the road
Posted by: 01GTshaner

Re: New Intake! - 12/02/08 01:34 PM

GTeisele - the filter i have is extremely snug in the PVC pipe .. there was a small lip of rubber on the intake that i trimmed down slightly and it isn't going anywhere. Thanks for the tip thought i might just go ahead and do that anyways.

That filter is tiny and that clamp is doing nothing.

What is that?
Redo it.
Posted by: 01GTshaner

Re: New Intake! - 12/03/08 12:14 AM

hmm

nope. i dont see an issue with it .. regardless if that clamp is doing nothing, its not hurting anything being there .. also i do enjoy the constructive critisism but i'm going to stick with what I have .

I feel as if though im getting flammed because im not using the most expensive parts and doing it the way each person has it done on their car. frown

No man. We don't do that around here. We are all feeling the crunch. Ask anyone, I'm always going the cheapest way possible with everything.

A 90* bend with a small filter just doesn't work as well as a big filter and 45* bend.

Hang in there. Don't let these snobs get you down. They've forgotten that the important point of modding is to improve performance. All they seem to care about anymore are 'start buttons' (326 pages and counting) and 'HIDs'. JUST KIDDING, LOL!
BTW, there is no such thing as "expensive parts" when you're dealing with PVC plumbing.

No, you just got the wrong parts. An intake is the easiest mod when done correctly, and it can be done very inexpensively.
You just happen to get the wrong coupler, wrong PVC tube and the wrong filter., and you installed the filter in a way that is also incorrect. The filter goes on the outside of the PVC tube, not on the inside.

We are just trying to help out, it just got negative quick.
Just been countless threads and pics of intakes.
Geez, I am on my 5-6th intake setup myself.
We just think you can do much better for the same money on your intake, for better performance as well as looks!

Oh and this ^, well that thread has info on it that helps people out. It is basically the rough draft to a DIY link. There are questions being asked and answers given, with great illustrations.
Now if you want to complain about 326 worthless pages, I say go check out some of Palsut's threads, (no offense Palsut, but those get dragged on out)

:p jk good humor but yea bro don't get emo over nothing haha

Re: New Intake! - 12/04/08 12:31 AM

not sure if this was mentioned, but the reason the filter needs to go on the outside is so the clamp can hold the filter to the elbow.

clamping the pvc to hold the filter is like trying to pick up a wet slice of bread with a toothpick, it just won't work.

the way you have it now, the filter could come out, and you'd have no idea it fell out, and then you may suck dirt into the engine (not so good!).

it would suck to ruin your motor do to a simple mod gone wrong....

Re: New Intake! - 12/04/08 09:26 AM

LOL!

Okie now that this topic has been de-railed to the maximum, i have just one more question.

I'm starting to get more $ each month now (thankfully) and i'm looking to put some cash into the car, more than i have already at least. Is my next step doing exhaust work? Such as a U-Delete or a DP ? I was leaning towards the muff removal, which isn't really performance just for looks / sound.

I do know there are countless threads (i think) about beginner / first mods, but what should my next step be?
Posted by: jaybur

Re: New Intake! - 12/04/08 10:23 AM

I wouldn't bother with a Ubend delete. its not as big of a deal on a GT as it is on a gtp. Save up for a downpipe, if you buy a good one, it will come with the high flow cat, and it already has a U-bend delete built in. that is how min was anyway.

why spend $80 (guess) for an exhaust shopt to put in a Ubend and then later buy a downpipe?

Not everyone does, but its a really common theme over on clubgp. Randall seems to know what he is talking about, I'm sure he realizes that a turbo will destroy a transmission

Is it me or is that tubing just bottlenecking the entire setup? Get wider tubing and bigger filter and try to bend at not such an angle..

I've been to every hardware store in town, literally .. and i dont think a 60* PVC pipe exists .. i was fully commited to changing it but apparently not lol. would a smaller 90* pipe with a straight one towards the fender THAN the filter be better??

Re: New Intake! - 12/04/08 12:52 PM

Well here's what I see most guys go through 2-5 cheap home made setups then eventually spring for a decent setup,so just pick the intake you like save your money and do it once and move on to the next mod.Chico(pops)

Re: New Intake! - 12/04/08 04:18 PM

shaner, adding a length of straight pipe isn't going to help.

If you push the filter toward the front of the car, you may get some cooler air (you're compromising between a HAI and a FWI). However, the longer the intake pipe, and the more bends there are, and the more severe those bends, the worse you will flow air. IMO, you should either go with a HAI with a 45degree bend, and a very short length of PVC; or, a designer CAI (expensive); or, a FWI (longer piping, colder air). Its debatable which is best, I think the HAI has the most potential, but if you're in a lot of stop-and-go conditions where your underhood temps are getting really high, you may do better on average with a CAI or FWI.

When i turn my car on in the morning .. there is a loud .. idk like air sucking noise coming from my engine at idle .. when i give it some gas it sounds normal with the zing of the intake.

Any reason why it would make this loud(er) noise? After the engine heats up (like 3 minutes) its fine.
