Please help me find a subwoofer, box, and amp - 04/07/09 10:22 PM

Right now I have the headunit linked below and im using the subwoofer out ch to a cheap old 75w max amp and then wired to a 10"subwoofer in a tube thats 150rms.The bass is ok with my current setup but my amp keeps going into protection mode(probably cause im running it at maximum output all the time)

I just hooked up my friends 150w rms single ch amp up to the subwoofer and there was almost no difference compared to my old amp.

So now im looking for a whole new setup now since it seems like my old one isnt getting any better with a bigger amp.

Im wanting to spend less than $300 for the Amp/Box/Amplifier
It just needs to fit in between the strut towers.
And im wanting enough bass that ill be able to feel it ouside my car. hopefully

My headunit Clarion DXZ385USB

its been very good to me and I love being able to plug my flashdrive right into it. But it really needs a sub to make it sound good

I got all that in my closet.
12" Audiobahn with custom box, cheap amp.
You can always find another amp.
Sub is from 2004, but has hardly any use.
I'm down in Ormond.
I'll send you pics wednesday hopefully.
Its carpeted black too.

max length of the box is 34.5" to fit between your strut towers snugly. My custom box is 34.5"Lx21"Wx13.5"H with a sloping back to fit against the seatback. This is for 2 12" subs.

Here's the mockup:

I didn't feel like building it so I used www.woodlawncabinetry.com . They were awesome, $130+shipping for the box, barely more than the generic q-logic boxes. Unfortunately, looks like he's not in business right now.

I have a 26" box about with two 10" sony 1200W subwoofers powered by an 800W sony 2ch amp and you can get a nice massage in all 4 seats and hear me coming from the end of my street.

Good luck with your search.

Good luck with the feeling it outside your car for $300. The amp for my subs cost $300 by itself and I only pull 135db which is barely loud enough to annoy people outside.

DONT buy Sony - they are nowhere near accurate with their power handling claims. The "800w" amp actually puts out 125w RMS into 2 channels.

You are shooting yourself in the foot by getting a box that spans the entire rear of the trunk - you are cutting off the passage of air to the inside of the car which will definitely hurt your volume.

You can build a fiberglass box that sits in the wheel well and fires INTO the cabin for less than $100 if you have the tools already. That will be louder, cleaner, and lighter than an mdf box.

I've always wanted to make a sub box in the spare tire compartment in the trunk using fiberglass but am worried that the box wouldn't be big enough.

I've done three and 2 of the 3 were good sounding - one was a JL 10w3 which sounded amazing, the other was a Diamond D3 which had some decent boom to it but made the trunk lid rattle like hell haha - the third was an RE MAX 12" which needed a gigantic 2.5 cuft box and the biggest I could get from the trunk was about 1.4 cuft with the.

Heres the diamond D3 in a Evo, I think I have pics of the RE MAX 12 in a Mercedes SLK but I gotta dig them up when I get home.

You may be right, however I'm pretty sure the rear deck lets through plenty of low frequency noise from the trunk. smile

my one 12" in a bandpass box is facing the rear of the car right against the back of the seat and it hits fairly hard I would say. Would it be louder in the car if I had it in the spare wheel well facing up towards the trunk lid? or would it just rattle the trunk lid more?

And what should I do about the amp fuse? Do I really need a huge 60something amp fuse inbetween the battery and amp.

Re: Please help me find a subwoofer, box, and amp - 04/08/09 12:49 PM

^60amp is on the small side. Your fuse needs to be large enough to handle not just the constant load but the peak load from the amp. The fuse's purpose is to prevent your battery from exploding in the event you are in an accident and the power wire is crushed against the chassis. If that happens, a LOT more than 60 amps is going to run through teh wire :p

if the box doesn't completely seal off the rear from the font it will hit harder facing backwards because of 'cabin gain' - the added length of the trunk boosts low end response.

firing up is a last resort to be used when you cant fit a regular box since it really does make the trunk rattle like hell :p you could always put a trim ring to face the sub forward but that defeats the purpose of a wheel well box.

Not sure if you have seen this box yet. I am thinking about replacing mine with one of these to get a little more space back.
