ZZP broke 2 records!!! - 08/24/06 10:56 AM

the first one
Here's the story-

Last week, we ran 9.67 and found that the injectors weren't cutting it. We may have been able to squeeze a little more out of them, but the plan is to run 8's, so out they went in favor of a larger set.

The new injectors flowed so much more than the old ones that we put together a whole new PCM file with radical changes for fueling. The first pass was a test run and went 9.88 at 140. Turned up the boost and adjusted the fuel and went 9.603 at 145.64 with a 1.49 sixty foot. Much to my dissapointment, the injectors have plenty of room, but the fuel pump was not keeping up at all and the air/fuel fell to 14.9 to 1 by the end of the pass. For the 3rd pass, we made some fueling changes to allow the pump to run a lower pressures with longer pulse widths. This was good for the following-
60' - 1.4891
330' - 4.0390
594' - 5.7468
1/8 - 6.1317
mph - 116.90
1000- 7.9311
mph - 135.86
1/4 - 9.4638
mph - 146.65

The run was bitter-sweet because the fuel system still isn't there. With the fuel pressure trickling down below 40 psi by the end of the run, the air/fuel ratio hit 14.1 as I went through the traps. The good news is that the car is running great and should be 9.20's capable at 26 psi with more fuel pump. The plan has been to hit 8's at 30 psi and we are still on track for that at this time. Also, FWIW, we now have over 30 runs on this car with no major failures. I'm loving the ZZP transmission. Of course 800 lbs of weight reduction is not to be overlooked

and teh second one ( rwd GP)

Chris Hoenles took the 3800 1/4 record earlier tonight at Milan only to be out done my Matt M at US !..! dragway......so now ZZP cars own the top 2 spots on the 1/4mile list....

Here are Hoenles numbers:

60'- 1.287
330'- 3.891
1/8th- 6.081
MPH- 110.84
1000'- 7.9849
MPH- 129.41
1/4- 9.6017
MPH- 138.60

"the plan is to run 8's"

I am completely overwhelmed by the mere thought of that. Impressed does not even begin to express how I feel.

I know the car is tweaked to all hell but still, to get that kind of performance is insane!

One of the really cool things is that this is on a stock L67 bottom end (stock pistons, rods, and crank). He got it from a salvage yard.

That's awesome. I can't believe that a v-6 front wheel drive can get those kind of numbers jawdrop

the buick grand national was a limited edition car, but it was a performance monster and when tweaked and modded became the premier giant killer of its day...I've said it before but here is proof in what ZZ has done...someday some magazine editor is going to call the GTP the most overlooked musclecar of the past decade...and the 3800 engine ranked second only to the small block chevy as one of the most venerable engines of the past 20 years. Hats off to the grandaddy turbo buick that spawned the stout and potent engine we enjoy today. cheers
who knows, even if the GP gives way to the G8, and becomes RWD, maybe we'll still be lucky enough to find some version of the 3800 under the hood. hammer hammer hammer

I think GM wants to kill the 3.8 in favor of the new 3.9 frown

Agreed on the "forgotten muscle car" note.

32-bit CPU is impressive as well as the variable timing and intake. I am glad GM is getting into the VVT world.

However, I won't say its phenomenal like Popular Mechanics claims it to be.

Seeing the horsepower numbers made my head go down. 3.9 = 240 HP N/A. Nissans's 3.5 already gets 270 and the ol' accord's 3.0 has 244 HP and 211 TQ.

The 3.9 does beat them on low end torque (240) in comparison to the competitors very high end torque, which should have been mentioned.
