emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 03:29 PM

ok so today i took my car in for emissions and before i did i took my OBDII scanner and erased my code for my bad rear 02 sensor. Right after i did that i drove to the emissions testing facility and they scanned it and it came out as a reject!! banghead So i asked the guy why it got rejected and he showed me my inspection report and it says that the readiness monitors were not set: Catalyst, Evaporative System, Oxygen Sensor, Oxygen Sensor Heater. So the guy asked me if my battery had been disconnected and i said no. So after thinking about it i thought that maybe if i go back tomorrow would it should pass? In the mean time i was looking on ZZP and Steve found the rear O2 sensor for me, when i replace that will i be able to go right back to have them scan it or do i have to wait a week like the 'troubleshooting' flyer they gave me says to do when something like this occurs?? confused

It says that in most cases, to reset monitors the vehicle will need to be driven more before it can be tested. It is suggested that motorists should drive heir vehicle as they normally do for about a week or so to set these readiness monitors to "complete" confused

If someone near milwaukee can help me out to either tune it so that it doesnt report or can help me replace it, thatd be excellent!!!! laugh

You need to drive like 60 some miles I think to set the readiness monitors.

And tuning out the readiness monitors, while not even possible with my PT, is a big no-no.

I'm fairly certain the DMV OBDII sensors can read codes/modules that are disabled.

But if you need any mechanical help, I've got off Saturday and wouldn't mind coming over to help.

gotta love nanny's

The scanners at the emissions stations can see that a code reader has been used recently or that the battery has been disconnected to clear the codes.

Thats what happens if you clear your codes too soon. Also clearing the codes and disabling them are two different things. If you disable them, they cannot detect them. If you clear them, I'm not entirely sure but they may be able to pull them - probably not though. Either way you have to take care of these things plenty in advance so what happened to you doesn't happen.

After you fix the rear O2 sensor, put the car through an OBDII Drive cycle before going back to the test center. That should set the readiness monitors.

well i just ordered the rear O2 from ZZP because the auto stores around here wanted $74 and they wanted $48 shipped. So as soon as it comes in I will let you know.

Should the battery be disconnected when switching the O2 sensor? Thank you very much for the driving cycle! i just gotta find a place where i can do the 55mph accelerations and decelerations without any hassle....

No need to disconnect the battery to swap the sensor, and you're welcome! smile Try to hit the highway when traffic is lightest (I know it's easier said than done... hammer ).

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 08:05 PM

see..the thing is, is that i live about 3-4 miles from the freeway....and from reading that it seems like they want it to be done sequence without any disruptions like stopping at stop lights..

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 08:20 PM

As long as you do it in sequence, you should be ok. I used to put customer's cars through that drive cycle, and the highway was a few miles away from the shop. Of course, I also had a Snap-On scanner hooked up, to make sure the cycle was completed. wink

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 08:23 PM

gee..that would be very helpful right about now...haha I just dont want to go in again and them say i got rejected again because then i have to have a mechanic look at my car and they have to sign off on the inspection report.

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 08:34 PM

Keep in mind most people just drive their car around for a week or so, with no clue whatsoever of what an OBD II drive cycle is...at least you'll be able to get it done sooner. hammer

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/17/08 11:37 PM

ok i got a question...lets say i get my sensor from zzp on monday and install it monday night...tuesday and wednesday i will be driving 30 miles one way to work. Do you think by doing that, that my monitors will reset themselves by driving 120 miles in 2 days??

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/20/08 10:03 PM

Yes. You'll cover all the drive cycle conditions over a couple days of commuting.

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/20/08 10:07 PM

awesome! i did a drive cycle last night and was almost through another one but when i was decelerating down to 20 MPH some person behind starting flashing their lights at me and yelled pull over! so i pulled over and they were like, " are you lost?" I was like no im doing something for my emissions test. lol and he looked at me and was like " umm...ok? well be safe with that!" so he drove off and i went home! haha

And have him install it, LOLOLOLOL!

Re: emissions UPDATE!!! - 07/25/08 01:22 AM

Actually, his car is damn near rust free!

I got under it and was like WTF?! Where's the rust?

Even Lanky's '02 is worse than Tim's.

I doubt I'd have much trouble installing it. Although, we'd have to soak the bolts the day before, just for good measure.
