hit a curb

My wife hit a curb at about 5klm a hour,I was with her.Anyways it had a small vibration after that.I went to the dealer where i bought it and they said the bearing was gone.$450 dollars to repair.WHAT???Anyone know that would be a fact.It's a 2004grand prix GT2

the bearings are part of the hub. You cannot buy them separately. The hubs are pricey because of the bearings and sensors that are built in. So 450 for the dealer to fix sounds bout right. Or you can do it yourself. for much cheaper.

At only 5 km! I would actually get your tires balanced and aligned first. I don't see a 5km hit destroying the bearings!

Either that or get a second opinion from somewhere else. And don't tell them what the dealer thinks it is.

I would think its a bent rim before a busted bearing.

Could just be a bad tire.

I haad a Tuarus with a vibration in the front at 70 and above. Brout to Midas and spent over a grand to replace a bunch of front end stuff. Got it back. The vibration still there. I put some new tires on the front and it was like new. My GTP is now doing the same thing. It came with a bad alignment. Now the front tires are all worn unevenly. I will try to get some cash from the dealer before I buy new tires, but I will be buying new tires next week.

A bad wheel bearing wont give you vibration UNLESS it's REALLY bad. By then it would be making so much noise, you couldn't stand to drive it. Vibration is caused by:
1. Out of balance tire(s).
2. Unevenly worn tire(s).
3. A bent rim.
4. A warped brake disk.

The alignment may have been damaged also, but that would not be a direct cause of vibration. It could eventually lead to vibration by causing uneven tire wear, but that would come later.

Have your front tires balanced, and ask the tire guy to check the rim for damage by visual inspection and spinning it on the car. Eliminate the cheap things first.

If your stuck with the 450......try an insurance claim........it was an accident!

It could be a bearing. It is posible for a roller to put a dent in the race. She was going so slow it seems like you should have been fine. I doubt the rim is bent. Although that is possible. Your alignment may also be out of whack. If the dealer says that the bearing is the problem then I would assume a new one would fix it, they tend to know what they are talking about. If you had gone to a corner garage I would be a little wary....

Be glad to. OK, since you didn't say what the problem actually turned out to be which is what we were curious about, I'll report it was a bent rim because that's the most logical thing for it to be.

A hub bearing is possible, but usually will make noise before a vibration starts. I'd start by having the tires rotated first, just to see if it changes or goes away. If it does, the problem is with the wheel or tire, which is no big deal. But, I'm assuming you have alloy wheels, which don't usually bend on impact. They either crack or just break. Try the tire rotating thing first; it's cheap and will help you isolate the problem. And yes, $450 is about right for that bearing to be replaced. It's not something that should be attempted on your own, however, unless you're really confident and have access to an impact wrench, which is the only safe way to do the job.
