altenator and wheel size ?'s.. - 06/14/07 01:31 AM

hey guys.. I have a 1997 GT 3800.. Just curious what all year alternators i can look for when buying..

Also what size wheels are you guy's able to run without running into any rubbing issues.. I wanna fill the wheel well up but don't want to have to do any removing of inner Mud flaps or anything..

Thanks in advance, Letha(--)

look for 97-98 alts... 99+ is different.

as for the wheels... up to 22's has been done, I think 18's are best, and as far as tires... 245 is the max width

drummerboy,

I'll have to disagree with the width... I'm running 255's on mine. They rub every so often, but if I rolled the fenders it woudn't be an issue at all.

Just my $0.02

I think he was refering to with the 245 being max without having to mod the fenders

My point was that I hadn't done anything to the fenders... The rubbing I get is when the car is fully loaded down or when I hit a large bump.

The one thing you have to keep in mind though is the offset on the wheels you get. Also, will the car be lowered at all?

It doesn't take much to get these cars to squat and I don't know about anyone else but I don't feel comfortable with any type of tire rub scenario.

From the FAQs:

any wheel with 5x114.3 or 5x115 bolt pattern and 38-45 mm offset should work just fine for the 97-03 GPs.

I can tell you all right now that Slick is running those tires with no problems with how he drives.

I've driven it multiple times. It doesn't have enough of a squat problem to prove interfering, unless, like he said, it was loaded down; he's thrown a jack and other miscellaneous crap in there and driven 200+ miles to help my dumb ass fix my car. It's lowered as well. As far as I know, he never has enough of anything in that car to make his tires a problem. He's a prude, he'd fix it if it was a safety issue.

So yes it is entirely possible to run a 255 on a 17" rim on a lowered GP. Just don't do it on stock struts .. Don't do anything on stock struts, they suck so much.

Yah if you throw four people in my car, its like I dropped the air pressure in the airbags (but I don't have airbags, in suspension that is).
