Aftermarket sway bars

Aftermarket sway bars - 05/26/07 05:24 PM

My 99 GTP has aftermarket sway bars. I'm getting fed up with the noise the bushings make, and no matter how much they are greased it doesn't seem to help.

Anyone have ideas? I'm tempted to go back to the factory sway bars, but I no longer have those. Is that something I can order online or from a dealer?

I would email Ed Morad, he owns a Grand Prix junkyard and can supply you with pretty much any used part for a good price.

His email is GTPED@msn.com

I don't think the problem is the sway bars, I think it's the bushings.

I would agree with bushings. Because I used stock bushing with aftermarket sway bars and smooth as a champ!

Either shoot Ed and email or see if you can buy some new bushings.

Well yeah, I think it's the bushings too... it's like they aren't greased very well. I've had them greased several times and it doesn't seem to help.

Sounds like an old spring mattress when I go over a speed bump. Higher temperatures outside seem to make them noisier.

What should I do?

If you lived in the area I might take you up on that.

As it stands I wouldn't mind going back to stock sway bars, bushings, and other fittings that go with the front/rear sway bars.

could be your struts if it's when traveling on bumpy roads.

Now I'm willing to bet sway bars/bushings aren't your problem.
I'd start looking at other components, like struts/springs.

Is there any way to tell for sure if it's the struts or springs? BTW, it only happens on the front end of my car, not the rear.

If you've got access to a put, you can get under the car and have someone else push down on it. You can then listen to where the noise is coming from.

Thanks for the tip to contact Ed Morad. He was great and shipped me some stock sway bars. I installed them and the problems are gone! Suspension is now whisper quiet. And honestly I can't tell the difference in handling. I should have done this long ago. Thanks again guys!

I don't even remember what brand. They were purchased back in 1999 or early 2000. I wouldn't in good conscience dump those things on anyone else. Besides the front sway bar bushing noise, the rear sway bar never did fit right and would sometimes clang against the (I think) rear strut when you go over bumps.

Sorry, I already tossed the parts. You should contact Ed Morad (gtped@msn.com). He sold me the front stock sway bar for only $35.
