Why do auto climate controls turn A/C on at 38 degrees?

Why do auto climate controls turn A/C on at 38 degrees? - 11/09/05 02:25 PM

On my 2000 GTP with automatic dual climate controls, every time I start the car (if it is above 38 degrees Fahrenheit outside) the A/C will come on.

I have to turn it off every time I start because, clearly, I don't need A/C when it below 60 or 70 degrees. It's a nusaince that really defeats the purpose of automatic A/C controls.

Is there any way to reprogram the PCM to raise the temperature threshold at which A/C will remain off?

Does it blow cold?
Just because the A/C is on, doesn't mean it's blowing cold, It's conditioning the air.

I am almost afraid to ask, but just how is it "conditioning" the air in your understanding?

By removing excess moisture from the air. That is how it's conditioned.

Hello,

The A/C assists with defogging when it's cold......
The freezing coils collect the humidity, and trap it from condensating on your windows. The air coming out of the vents will be warm because the A/C is not working at full power.
If your windshield is fogged on the inside, it will clear much more rapidly with the A/C on. It will still blow warm, but the A/C coils will pick up the moisture in the air as is passes by them. This also holds true if you are having a problem with your side windows staying clear on the inside. The A/C will assist in keeping them clear.

Later now,
Clint

think of it as an on-board de-humidifier...which is a big help on those days when its foggy and rainy and you want the windows to stay clear.

Clean windows help a bit too...

Thanks for the lesson in condensation. smile

Anyone have an answer for the question? Can the the car be reprogrammed to modify the temperature at which the A/C comes on automatically? How?

I am usually not overwhelmed by humidity when the temperature is below 70 degrees.

Mine used to come on all the time, now it comes on every once in a while when it's really warm outside like about 78 or so............are my sensors going bad or what?
