Fuel Grade for 2006 GP GT Supercharged - 12/09/05 06:59 PM

Dealer told me that their is a "knock sensor" in the new 2006 GT's that absolutely allow it to run on regular fuel. I'm just about to take delivery and definitely want to run it on the correct grade of fuel. I've read the '06 GP GT brochure inch by inch and cover to cover and they fail to mention fuel anywhere in the brochure, leading me to believe they are failing to tell you that it requires premium fuel. It won't stop me from my purchase but I want to be sure to use the correct grade.

It can run OK on 87, but you'll lose a little performance. The prior gen's engines REQUIRED 93 or they would run like crap banghead . I found that out firsthand when the guy put 87 in my 1997 GTP (no self-serve in NJ  ). It took 3 tanks to get it back to "normal". I learned to always watch which one they choose.

But I digress. I tried 87 in my 04 once, and it wasn't that noticable a difference. Even so, I only get 93 or if I can 94 cool .

If it requires premium fuel it will say it on the gas cap or or the gas door. Also, if you check in the manaul it will say. I assume it only requires 87 octane unless it is a GT that has a supercharger, I haven't kept up with the engine options as of late. I think they did away with the GTP designation for 06 but don't know how they are naming them now.

The new GT (w/ SC) has improved knock sensors as everyone has stated and you will be able to run regular, HOWEVER if you want maximum performance you will want to run premium.

The only thing the new improved knock sensors will do is pull timing fast enough (ie crap on performance) to prevent engine damage when you run low octane - it won't actually compensate for low octane fuel :-D

Thanks much everyone. I'm going to run 93 and get the performance I'm hoping for. I'm used to paying for premium for my Vette and my wife's 1.8T Passat. It's only money! It's good to know that the engine won't be compromised by an accidental use of regular octane fuel.

To think that fuel prices are going up, again... mad
