concepts are just that...three dimensional ideas. They are put out at the show simply to gauge public reaction. Even the automakers learned after a while that if you show a sleek, sexy concept and then the production car bears little resemblence it doesnt go over well in the sales dept.

I seem to recall the Dodge Viper as being one of the first concepts that was actually a running, working and driveable car. From concept to platform it changed very little which help preserve enthusiasm. SInce going from show stage to production line is what makes all the changes anyway, why not just start with an existing platform...which is exactly what happens with most concepts today...this makes them "buildable" then only demons become cost and potential recovery of those cost thru sales. The Pontiac Solstice was a shining example of modern concept work. The original showpiece was actually built from parts bin items already in use by GM.
