Grand Prix thread - 05/07/06 07:05 PM

Here's a discussion about the 07 GP and it's predecessors over at GMinsidenew.com

You can tell those that own the 3.8 and thoughs who don't.

Still with the 3800, UG!

How about a new interior, a 6-speed and the 3.6L DOHC for an upgrade engine.
IF the Grand Prix came with an optional 3.6 engine, how would that be considered an upgrade from the 3.8?
Granted, I have not driven a G6 with the 3.6 so I have no clue what the 3.6 is all about. I just find it hard to believe a smaller engine would be an upgrade.
Dindak's comment made no sense to me.

Iirc the 3.6 is a technological upgrade and produces slightly more HP (don't know about torque)then the L36.

But ya I'm with ya on that one.

well i just so happen to have gotten info the the mail about the g6 , there looks to be 3 engine options the 4 cyl 2.4 with 167 hp, the 3.5 with 201 hp and the 3.9 with 240 hp and the g6 vert with a 3.9 227 hp now the grand prix shows a 3.8 with 200 hp,the 3.8 s/c with 260 hp and the 5.3 with 303 hp

Herc, simple call on the 3800 bashing. Most of them are young idiots brainwashed with the ricer scene and all the hype surrounding D/OHC. Great way to get power out of 4 banger, but when you have torque there is no purpose for it. They also seem to overlook reliability. Pushrod engines can take a licking and keep on ticking. Any kind of D/OHC engine is a maintenance hog after 50k. As for the one guy with his North* V8, lets see his oil consumption and what he's saying about it when he has to fix something. It's maintenance nightmare. I'd take a pushrod any day of the week.

I can understand them bashing for lack of the 6 speed, but because of the engine? WTF.

I have to admit, I'm no mechanic, nor do I have much of a knowledge of the evolution of engines, but I have heard very little to no bashing of the 3800. A lot of people that I talked to prior to buying my first GP told me that "you just cant kill it". IMO its a strong running car off the line with lots of room to grow on. I had no idea how versitile of an engine it was and how easy it was to make a few mods and make it an even stronger running car.

the 3.8 V6 has been around in various forms for many a year...to me it is as much of a time proven animal as the small block chevy...the 3.8 has been made to produce giant killing HP (just check out a Grand National) and its as reliable as a rock...I'm with RooK on this one, give me a stout pushrod engine any day over the nervous, wheres the torque, high revving OHC engines...I still want a convertible as a playtoy car and if I can get my hands on one with a 3.8 under the hood, I'll feel pretty confident about what I get.

I've got a little pride in my 3.8 knowing it's a direct decendant of the GN's 3.8.

Ive always been a GM fan, mostly chevys, put ive always liked the pontiacs, and when i had enough of the 500 beater cars, I decided to get something that would last, so I was looking for something with a 3.8, it just so happend there was a grand prix wrapped around it...and I have to say the choice was good thumbsup
