Radar Detectors - 09/03/06 10:06 PM

So I recently recieved a ticket and I wouldnt have gotten it had 1. I paid a bit more attention to my speed. 2. Had a Radar detector.

I was wondering who here has a radar detector and which ones work the best. I've seen the Valentine 1's advertised in many car mags for years, but the $400 price tag seems a bit much.

friend of mine had a valentine. It worked good till a cop saw it at a redlight. Smashed it on the spot and $500 dollars. Make sure you hide it pretty good. Valentine 1 has to be the best in my opinion. The arrows are a big help!

From what I've found on the internet they're not illegal in Michigan anymore. I even asked a former Michigan State Trooper and he said they werent illegal, so if that is true, I shouldnt have to destroy it. Should I get pulled over and they see it...I think that'll remove all chance of me just getting off with a warning.

My secret is driving the speed limit. I save money on tickets, gas, and radar detectors.

Well, even if you spend a good $200 on a detector and it saves you from ONE ticket, it will pretty much pay for itself, then you can look at it maken you more money for every other ticket it saves you from angel

Re: Radar Detectors - 09/04/06 03:36 PM

Mine does...lol...i have gone trough about three radar detectors in my 3 years driving. the best one out there is the Beltronics it is the same as the passport 8500. i have the beltronics one and it will pic a tropper up before the radar gun pics you up. If the troppers near you use laser not radar dont even botther gettin a radar detector b/c you pic the laser up as it hits you and when it hits you he already has your speed. If you do buy one you sould pout in right on the dash b/c it is no good anywere else. Austion has it up above the mirror but the fade in the windsheild make the radar detector hard to pic up the radar b/c of the tint. it brings the range of it down about 30% which is about the time it takes to get from 90 to about 50 if hittin the breaks hard. The thing about radr detects tho is there are illiegal in VIrginia and Mass. if you are in any other state and they pull you over for a radar detector and they break it on you call your lawyer.

Its hard for me to do the speed limit. The Metro Detroit area is a face paced driving area. On the Freeways the average speed is about 80. I also have a mod that makes it even harder to do the speed limit, its called a lead foot.

I heard the V1 is the best one out there. But for 300 bucks, it's a little on the expensive side, but then again, I think they say that if you get a speeding ticket, they'll pay it.

I have a nice radar detectory, but haven't used it in about a year and a half. When I had it, I still got pulled over once in a while, and the cops couldn't see it, b/c I put it where Bobby has his. But, ever since I took it out of the car, I haven't even got pulled over, and I don't drive any different. I honestly belive that there is a way for the cops or troopers to tell if you have one, even if it has a cloaking device, because my freinds have had the exact same thing happen to them, no radar detector, no ticket.

Some can tell if you have a detector, most models can detect that they are being detected and the radar detector will automatically shut down. My last 2 radar detectors had this feature, including my current one.

Its called VG2, VG2 is a radar detector that a cops has it picks up the signals that the radar gives out. BUt the radar detectors that I have and i think Austin has picks up that singal from the VG2 and shuts off..

Brown,

Sounds like you drive on 696. As long as I been driving Michigan has not had a ban on radar detectors. And I've never heard anyone say that they have ever had a ban on them

Check Ebay. I got my slighty used Passport 8500 for about $140. It was in excellent condition and works great.

hey caesar, I stick mainly to 94 and 275 but I did research them a while back and I think they were banned for a short time but the ban was recently repealed.

ive got the same one as austin i think, it works well i have it in the same spot also. ive talked to a sheriff friend of mine he said i would have a better chance of talking myself out of a ticket if i didnt have it. i figure if i have it where they cant see it i should be fine.

Re: Radar Detectors - 09/08/06 10:43 PM

yeah, the radar detector pretty much throws your chance of getting off with a warning out the window. Cuz if you have a radar detector and you still get pulled over, they just look at you as an idiot. But I usually only do 10+/- over on the highway...so just about any radar detector should give me enough warning to slow down.
