Potter, Harry Potter - 07/12/07 07:40 AM

Went and saw the new Harry Potter last night. Very good movie. The wife and I enjoyed it very much. Now to wait for the new book.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/12/07 11:07 AM

I'm listening to the audio book right now. I hope that the movie is half as good as the book. I will be seeing the movie next Saturday at the IMAX in 3D.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/12/07 11:53 AM

The movies are less than half as good as the books, they never stick to the original story lines. It wouldn't be so bad if they just left subplots out, but they rewrite about 1/3 of the material.

Anyway, I'm going to see the movie Monday. I also went and prepaid for one of the Deathly Hallows on Tuesday. I can't wait to get the book in my hands, although it will probably only last two days like the previous one.

Never seen movie or read the book. But I did read two weeks ago about a Theme Park Harry Potter in Disney here in Florida. That's gonna be another big seller!!!

I myself read the first 25 pages of the first Harry Potter book shortly after first came out. Got bored quickly and have never given the series or the movies any attention since.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/14/07 02:37 AM

I havent read any of the books but the movies have been pretty entertaining. I wouldnt say its my fave series by far but it has had some excellent special effects...some of the fantasy animals have been awesome and the fact that each of the kids has their own owl is pretty cool...but my hands-down favorite is Dumbledore's Phoenix "Fawkes"...and boy would I love to have one of those (but I'd settle for a Firebird) laugh

I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but this is my observation just from talking to people.

I don't know why the movies are correlated with the books. I think it's one of the things that leads people to be let down. The author obviously fits a lot more into the book than could ever be in a movie. What's wrong with having two movies that are only based on one book?

The books build up to a climax at the ending. There is no real way to make two movies on one book, because the first one would be really boring with little action, and the other would lack ground work for the action. As I said, they'd be fine if they just dropped subplots and stuck to the story line.

Case in point is the last movie in the scene with the dragon. In the book, the dragon did not break loose and chase him all over the school. That was a large waste of time and CG animation for a directors whim.

But there may be a less profitable outcome if it was so similar to the book. They thing they care about most is making people money, most likely.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/16/07 03:06 AM

I love the books, but I'm not a huge fan of the movies (especially the third one). I do plan on seeing the 5th movie within the next week, and I have preordered the final book. I can't wait, I just finished re-reading all the other books to refresh my memory.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/17/07 05:48 AM

You gotta remember books are for entertaining the mind where as movies are for entertaining the eyes.

You never go into a movie expecting it to be exactly like the book.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/17/07 09:03 AM

Yea, but some of these movies were done especially poorly. IMO

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/17/07 10:47 AM

The audiobook version of the "Order of the Phoenix" is 26½ hours long. It's impossible to have all of the detail from the book transfered to the big screen.

Like TBat, I would love to have Fawkes as well. I wouldn't have to worry about getting injured since I'd have Phoenix tears to fix me up. lol

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/17/07 08:31 PM

Having Fawkes would be cool, but was it just me, or did he look pretty ugly in (I think) the fourth movie?

Fawkes is supposed to be a beautiful bird, and whichever movie it was, that's just not how he struck me.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/18/07 06:42 PM

I just got back from the fifth movie. It was ok, but they cut out way to many details. If you haven't read the book, you won't know why a lot of what's going on is going on.

For example, you wouldn't understand why three people are caught trying to use Umbridge's fire, but then there are 6 people in her office in trouble for it. Or pretty much anything about the prophesy.

And before anyone says "The movie is made for people who read the book," I disagree (or think that if they did that, it's a stupid reason). Most people who read the books think the movies are disappointing (or at least, that's what everyone I've talked to says).

Present!

I saw the movie, and honestly I'd be confused as well if I hadn't read the book.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/21/07 11:58 AM

Stopped in at a store last night to pick up some stuff a little after midnight. HOLY CRAP! The entire store was over run by little harry potters and potter fans of all ages. Saw a few people that were easily in their forties with wizrd robes on. Some kids even had stuffed owls perched on their shoulders. There were people sitting in the furniture section of the store reading the book. I have never seen so many people at a store at one time. You would have thought there was a new game system being released.

Here's the benefit of ordering from Amazon.com: I was in bed asleep last night at midnight, enjoying it, and had the book by 10:30 this morning. laugh

A bunch of crazies, those people are... same folks that dress up and camp outside theatres when Star Wars came out, and same idiots waiting in subzero temps for the Playstation 3 to come out. What a waste of time and life

I also have a full time job which is exhausting, meaning most of my time is spent at work or sleeping. So, I'm not in any hurry to finish it. :p

Late night reading, I'm on page 502. smile

Done with it. :p

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/23/07 04:08 AM

Some of the people I saw buying the latest book were really intending to make a night of it. A few people had a couple fifths in their shopping cart along with a copy of the book. 800 pages is too much for me. I'll take a car magazine over a book any day (mainly because of the pictures)

Anyways, Chuck and Larry bypassed Harry Potter this weekend!

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/23/07 03:03 PM

I started reading it last night. Read 110 pages. That's the most I've read in one night (other than a textbook since I was a kid). And the book only has 759 pages. devilgrin devilgrin

Also, for anyone who wants to see the Order of the Phoenix...see it at an IMAX theater. It was well worth the extra cost.

Yes, it was good.

Re: Potter, Harry Potter - 07/29/07 02:54 AM

The epilogue was kinda lame though. Kind of a...predictable, cliche ending to an otherwise action-packed book.
