You hit the wheel and window because your body was fully asleep and your reaction wasn't as fast as 30 mph to a hault. Glad you are alive to talk about it.

Lets all keep our hopes high, so far we have the blessing that dan is alright and that the airbags didnt go off, wait....that shouldnt be a sentence. why the @#$% didnt the airbags go off. Can we please have a knowledgable person explain this to us because its slightly confusing. The only thing i can think of is that since it wasnt a "halt" crash....(aka running flat into a cement wall) as opposed to the resulting "roll crash" (hitting an object capable of moving or that does move, aka the fire hydrent)....looking at the car myself, i just want to stop driving my car. dan,my bud sold me my car and is the sole and only reason why I am typing here today. It was sheer randomness that I got the GT I have now. I knew nothing about GP's if it wasnt for him, this really is a let down for the GP community....I can't drive places without that car, its what makes me appreciate mine. that car cant be totaled.

When I put my car in the ditch, the front of it slammed into a mound of hard dirt. Didn't do as much damage as blewgtp had, mainly because it was more spread out, but my airbags didn't go off either. Good thing for my wallet, but kinda worrying.

That will be a tough call on writing it off ,if the frame is'nt bent too much it may be salvagable since it's an 03 ,sorry about the car but glad your OK as far as air bags it looks like they should have gone off.Chico.

It looks close to me...the frame doesn't appear to be damaged to me. Plus it's an 03 so that would help with value of it.

I remembering something from a driver's ed speaker...for some reason I'm thinking up to 35mph into a mostly solid object would cause them to go off. Since he was going 30, he may have just been under the limit.

The airbags didn;t go off b/c he wasn't goping fast enough, you woul dhave to be moving 35+ for them to go off. Either way with the front end bent like that they have to chagne out the airbag system anyway b/c moving the car around with the senors they way there are set, thr airbags could go off at anytime. So I wouldn't key the car at all. Also did you tell the insurance company that you fell asleep at the wheel and thats why you hit the hydtant. I would have said s deer poped out or any BS axcuse. If yout ell them you fell asleep they will kill you with the insuracne coverage next quarter.

its hard to tell them you hit a deer because you are suposto hit the deer, i had this problem because i was driving a friends car one night and it was foggy and suddenly there was 5 cows in the middle of the road and i swerved to miss them but i couldnt avoid them i nicked 2 of them and the car went into the ditch. and the insurance company tryed to tell me that cows were like deer and that they can be in the middle of the road and all of that b.s. but they kept saying that you are not suposto swerve for the deer .... idk what you could tell them

IIRC, there are two sensors on/in the front bumper of a GP, approx 1/4th in from each side. That's what they told me when my GP got wrecked and mine didn't go off. However, there is an "override switch" something about if the impact is great enough, it will set them off, unless the seatbelt isn't buckled. in my wreck, the pass. side bag should have gone off, but since I was the only one in the car, it didn't and it saved me a bunch of money. (blew up the SIR coil though, so I had to get that fixed) if they do fix it and when you get it back, your SW controls don't work, and the air bag lite is on, have them replace the SIR coil and you should be good to go

My theory for why mine didn't go off is my right front tire took an impact on the drain I went over, and then I hit the mound of packed dirt. I was going fast enough to set off my airbags when I lost traction most likely, but when my tire hit, it slowed me down enough so that the main impact wasn't very bad.

Maybe I should have given that tire a proper burial...lol

That sucks man. When I got in my accident, my airbags went off. I didn't even realize they went off until I had time to look around and figure out what the smell was. They did save my life though because I'm sure I would have hit the wheel or the windshield if I didn't have airbags. Well, it's good that you are in one piece.

How close are you gusyt o the steering wheel when you drive? I have the seat all the way back, and ther is no wa y to hit the wheel unless your not wearing your belt. YOu would have to be close to hit the steering wheel and wearing you seat belt.
