Since i can't get a GTP cause I owe a lot i might as well do the next best thing .. top swap!

A guy 3 hours away is selling a complete swap with everything that is required for $350, picked up . Might as well right ? Local guy willing to install it with me , he top swapped his car last fall too so it should be fun.

More info to come when i'm supposed to go get it.

Well thanks to my loving parents who will give some early Xmas cash i'm probably going to make it a trip with a few friends and stay the night there in a hotel.

It is $350 for all parts , here is the list he sent in a PM to me :

L67 Throttle body w/ all sensors including MAF
Supercharger, snout, pulley
L67 lower intake manifold
L67 injectors
L67 Complete Heads w/ valve covers
All the brackets and idlers as well

Only thing he doesn't have is the crank pulley, i'll probably be getting a new S/C coupler , oil , and supercharger gasket, as well as a belt.

Any recomendations on a belt ? By that i mean brand. And like i said i have a local guy or two willing to help w/ the install and can check out the stuff. He's going to send pics so i'll toss them up as soon as i have them. My friend has a powrtuner too so thats a +++.

Looking forward to this. i've been ever envious of not buying a GTP, and when i purchase a legit FWI , put my 180* back in and service my tranny i'll be GOOD TO GO. BOOST OR GO HOME.

No his name is Rob , i'm in Canada don't forget.

I just asked him a few more things including the gaskets inquiry. I need new valve cover gaskets but i get new ones with the swap so we'll see what i need when he answers / sends pics.

ok thanks, i will check it out. im sure you can probably get more power out of a turbo vs a supercharger. just dont know how expensive it would be. or can u get just about the same power from a supercharger?

Because it is his post about his top swap and I rather keep this post on topic about his questions. That is why you can make new topics so that it doesn't all get cluttered up.

I'd think the GT has different pistons with a higher compression ratio, do they?
Also, isn't the trans geared lower in the GT?

Yes gt 9.5:1
gtp 8.5:1

The CPR is no issue dude at all. And the gearing will help him.

I believe you dont need a different LIM gasket with the L67 heads but I'm not certain. Someone will answer you.

I'm so excited hahaha, like a little kid on xmas.

I have all the gaskets ordered individually through ZZP, their head gaskets are 2 x more expensive then local, total i'm getting:

Valve Cover Gaskets
Supercharger Gasket
Injector O-Rings
Upper and Lower Coolant Elbows
Head Bolts
Crank Bolt
Throttle Body Gasket.

All that for $133 CDN to ship to my door. Considering adding in the head gaskets ($45) i'm saving a ton of money.

Hopefully no LIM and i'll be buying head gaskets locally. Last purchase i need to make is some S/C oil, some motor oil, coolant, and some high temp paint of my choice to paint the valve covers and the s/c + snout. Any recomendations ? I'm feelin Galaxy Silver, but want to be unique.

You could probably buy a whole top swap for the price of what it costs to paint that.

2 local GP owners, using his driveway as he has a lot of tools at his disposal. He did a top swap on his 98 GT last year, did a tune for it, and its running amazing. Looking forward to the install as well and definitely be gainging knowledge. All its costing me is some food from my restaurant I work at , haha, score!

So i need to buy fuel injector connectors apparently , another $49.99 that i don't want to spend. Any reason as to why 01+ cars need these to work ?

EV1 and EV6 connectors. Injectors aren't universal.

However find out which ones you need and get them from Morad.

So Chris, your saying to check in with Ed Morad on the injector connectors themselves or to get injectors that will work for the top swap itself?

Also , should I know if my 01 GT has EV1 or EV6 ? then i can just find out what this GTP's injectors are (thats what i'm going to be using in the swap) and if they match then there is no problem.

Haha , internet is good. I found this basically solving my problem .. courtesy of GrandPrixForums.net

"I have researched this because I want to eventually put L67 injectors on my 2004 LeSabre.

Up to 2003, L36 and L67 = EV1 injectors (easy swap; no splice or adapter needed)

2004+ s/c apps = EV6 injectors
2004+ L36 = Multec2 injectors"

Conclusion : 1997-2003 Grand prixs, whether you're an L36 or an L67 you have the same injector connector, therefore allowing you to swap easily to GTP injectors w/o splicing into your factory wiring.

So 01GTshaner you're saying I only need injector connectors or the L36 will plug directly into L67 w/o the connectors?

I'm pretty sure it said if your 01+ you need injector connectors or something Like that and I am a 2002.

I give up .. Wbodystore.com under their injector adapter description say

"Series II Naturally Aspirated (Our cars GPGTA) engines 2000 and newer use Multec injectors and will require the adapters. All Series II supercharged engines use EV1 injectors, and all Series III engines use EV6 injectors"

I guess that solves it. Adapters are needed

ZZP or Wbody have them. I think we'd need EV6 to EV1 connectors.

... Wow you even posted it and you didn't pick up on it. First off if you are using GTP injectors then use GTP injector connectors and solder them on. You do connectors based off of the injector. I had to solder connectors for my 50's.

So i went to work cleaning the crap out of everything. Heads, valve covers, blower, the TB is disgusting inside and i wanna clean that tomorrow. Ordering all the necessary gaskets tomorrow as well. I check the injectors and i'm heading to a junkyard tomorrow AM to salvage through some GTP's to use their connectors and just solder like ChrisGT said.

Also, went ahead and prep'd the valve covers and the blower for paint, got some high temp paint and a wire brush drillbit and went to town for an hour. End result? Screaming orange OF COURSE. Brighter in person as the lighting in my spare room blows!

Comments ?

I've only seen pictures personally with a silver GTP that has orange accents and there were a ton. I'd like to keep the colours to a minimum and I think this is just right. I'd like to do something with my alternator in the future, probably polish. We'll see.

Lets play guess that number... can someone identify these for me? I'm assuming 2, 3 are for vacuum lines that lead to.....*drawing a blank*. The other I think is a fuel rail bolt and the rest, well that's why im posting.

They had a lime green almost high temp paint, was tossing between those two haha. Glad i went with orange, subtle and means business IMO. I didn't sand them no, all i did was de-grease the crap outta them, scrubbed them down, dried them and painted the best i could, tossed a light layer of clear for some shine and thats how they look. Wire brush on the blower and it looks not too shabby.

And Sham-Wow's didn't impress me drying the car , so they're being represented ironically here lol.

Definitely not doing single belt, screw that. IDK how he did it, but i'm sure its not THAT hard seeing as my installer did it fairly easy, i think he said thats what took the longest. Not sure.

Some guy on a ontario / quebec GP club says this :

The thing is the N/A engine have higher compression, so they heat up more under the same pulley size when compared to a L67 which has lower compression. This is why ZZP has made the 4.0 and 4.2 pulley's (with the offset) to use one belt. It looks like you're going to grab the other pulley's, crank pulley, etc?...then you'll run two belts like the L67's but internally the engine is still a L36. Now I would presume that 4.2 and not larger was done so if you did just basic mods, like the minimum, Ported manifolds, DP w U-bend delete, plugs, Stat and PCM should be fine with a 4.2.

Is he correct or lieing.

Eh hes not wrong but he is over exaggerating the point. Granted the L36 has higher compression ratio 9.5:1 compared to the L67 which is 8.5:1. That being said doing a top swap alone without certain other mods will cause KR. But you have enough of the supporting mods already to run a 3.8 pulley. A dounpipe would help but not necessary. If you are having someone tune it just make sure they pull a little more timing. Ive seen loads of people just do a top swap and be fine but supporting mods are there for a reason. However you should be good with what you have. I know zzp's tune for a top swap is for the 3.8 pulley so your buddy is one of those omg safety tree huger people. Don't worry about it just make sure whoever is tuning knows what size pulley your using. Our engines are beast don't worry about it.

Thats what i thought. I have NGK TR55's and i probably could go w/ Autolite 104 / 103's for the heat range difference JUST to be safe but its not that huge of a deal.

103's are too cold. They are for turbo setups more. Stick with 104's.

ZZP is crazy. I know they're only a few hours away but i ordered my shipment (about 7 items) and got sent tracking information less than 2 hours later and i'll be getting it today (since its 4 am lol)

Pretty good I'd say.

I went with the 104's, thanks guys. Also I'll be getting my manifolds ported as well ! Thats pretty good. All thats left to buy :

S/C Oil
Head Gaskets
Oil
Coolant
Belt
Injector connectors
Crank Pulley

What has been said is correct you can run a pulley size warented by you mods (Irun a 3.25 on a 10-1 comp. ratio with mods and 0 kr)you get a lot of misimformation from different club sites that have no real experience with a top swap ,the thing is start with a MPS so you can work up on pulley sizes as you mod ,its good your starting wit a dual belt setup because frankly the single belt system is limiting and you will want to change ,now with the crank bolt its not that hard just put a pair of vice grips on the fly wheel to hold and use a breaker bar with a piece of pipe to remove the old damper if you do'nt have a puler just use a block of wood and a small sledge (you do'nt have to worry about damaging it as your not using it again) any questions just ask I have been running a FI L-36 for 2 years and have'nt blown up yet.and fyi do'nt bother with PEMS they are a waste of time especially the front the rear is ok and to port this along with a plog and 3"DP is a good setup or just spring for some cheap e-bay headers .Chico(pops)

What Chico said except for some reason I wonder if you know how to get at the flex plate lol. Your going to have to separate the trans from the motor.

If your going to do headers down the line don't bother porting the rear or doing the Plog. Just save up for your end goal.

To access the flex plate to hold engine while breaking loose the crank bolt simply drop the trans splash guard attach vise grips on the flex plate on the right hand side .....

You would need a667 SC belt and a915 acc belt.

Painted the fuel rails silver to match body colour and cross braces under the hood, good contrast.

Question.

With the mods that i have, listed in my signature, I know for a fact that besides some minor exhaust work I'm planning on doing nothing to my car post top-swap minus maintenance. Can i keep my stock GT injectors in the car w/o worrying about them not functioning enough to power the boost added to the car?

L67 injectors are going to be a must if you're adding boost. That is something I wouldn't mess with. Running out of fuel is a bad thing.

Well the days go by and i'm slowly racking up the funds to buy, what it seems like, a new part everyday. I need a crank pulley still , a belt, and fluids, but i have a few lined up so its just a matter of time before i get my hands on them.

I'm too impatient of a person to let this sit so long !!! Gah !

Bumping.

Finalized the list of things i need and its just down to :

Oil + Filter
Coolant
Crank / Balancer
S/C Belt

Headgaskets ordered and on their way , and I'll be placing the order for the s/c belt, balancer, and s/c oil on wednesday. From what I'm understanding, weather and garage permitting, I'll be boosted by the end of January.

laugh

oh, one thing i noticed....you are going to want to use your stock fuel lines/connectors as the GT connectors are a much better solution to the L67 connectors..plus they are WAY easier to put on and take off.

Just thought I would tell you because I just noticed that you have the L67 fuel lines on the fuel rails already. but believe me, the L36 connectors/lines are MUCH easier for installation and removal.

Thanks guys. I had to re-read that I didn't quite get it at first. You're referring to the black tubing coming off the rails, correct?

yes. Though you will need to purchase a fuel line tool in order to get the l67 ones off (the round silver things on the actual rails that are connected to the black tubing).

Looks good. Is there a reason people paint the case and not the snout on blowers?

Black and silver looks nice, you should clean up that overspray though...

I've noticed that is a very common trend. I painted both pieces of mine, but each a different color (Red/Black). It gives it a bit more contrast, I guess.

I didn't even notice the overspray until later on. I think once overspray is cleaned up itll be ready to go on car.
