good oil? worth it?

i went to the mechanic the other day to get a tranny flush and i needed an oil change too so i just did both. i told them i wanted mobil one full synthetic (what i always use) and they gave me full synthetic but it was amsoil.
the machanic said it was better and lasts 15,000 miles or one year and that crappy filters and often the problem with good oil going bad too early. he said the amsoil filter is high quality and to change just the filter after 7,500 miles or six months.

oil was expensive, about 7 dollars a quart and the filter was 22.50.

anyone have any thoughts or input?

Amsoil is some great stuff, a little pricey but not bad for the quality. Amsoil is the only oil that lasted longer than the top of the line Mobil 1 oil in some test bobistheoilguy did.

If you go with extended oil changes, expect to change the oil filter in between changes. This also allows you to add a fresh ~.7 quarts (depending on filter size) of oil which will add some additives back in.

Check out bobistheoilguy.com for great info on oils. HTH

Expensive, but sounds like it's worth it. I'd say as long as it's synthetic you'll be fine.

My guess is the cost is due to their advertising cost. Google oil comparison and you will find TONS of amsoil "favored" sites that were made by the company.

Because of this, I decided to just stick to Mobil 1 and its filters based on the oil guy's website recommendations.

I run Castrol dino. Given the high mileage of my vehicles I don't wanna run the risk of gaskets leaking. Which is common when switching from dino to syn on older motors.

My bike I run a synthetic.
