Hey guys, just got a quick question. My driver's side front wheel hub assembly is starting to go (making noise). I need to replace it and I wanted to replace both fronts at once since I figure I'll be changing the other soon anyway. I have brake pads and rotors in my mind when I ask this, but is it okay if I change out the left hub with a Timken replacement and leave the factory one in the right side for the time being, or should I be swapping both of them? Any issues just changing the one side? I just don't have a whole lot of extra money right now, so I'd like to just swap out one for now. Thanks!

Shouldn't make any difference w/ replacing one hub, and not the other. I would do the brakes fist, and then see if the noise went away, if so, then don't do the hub. May save you some $$$.

I was just asking if the hubs were similar to brakes in that you should replace both fronts or both rears at once, or if it didn't matter. I do need new brakes, though. Shop already confirmed it was a wheel hub. $350 + Labor... no thanks. Going to go with a Timken replacement. As long as I can swap out the problematic one for now then the other later on, that's all I needed to know. smile

Yep no issues swapping one hub out at a time. It's the perfect time to do your brake rotors as well since you have to pull all the parts off to change the hub.

Yes, can change the one that needs to be changed.
BTW, I didn't have any luck with (2) replacement brand hubs. I eventually exchanged them for an OEM hub and it worked perfect. I probably paid like $215 for the part and I did the labor myself.

OK, I got my new hubs in yesterday. I can not find a 36MM socket. Where do you get one that big? Also, can you use a set of channel locks to get it off?

If you can't find one local, try Ebay

Get the 6 point, not the 12 point.

Well, after 2.5 hours of trying to get the other nuts off the caliper I gave up. They would just not come off. I guess it will hit the shop next week. O well, live and learn.

Thanks for your help on this.

Are you talking about the bolts that hold the whole caliper on, that if removed allow you to remove the rotor? Were they rusted on or why wouldn't the come out I wonder?

Well, after almost a $200 labor bid I got I decided to give it another try. I got the caliper off this time. Now for the hub. Any hints on the best way to get these off. I tried going to Herc's site but it is down.

Thanks
