Ok guys my 1997 GT has developed an oil leak, I can't seem to figure out where it is coming from so I figured I would post here and see if there are any normal leak locations for these cars so I could check things out a little better. Its not a whole lot of oil, over the past month it has leaked around a half quart.

Or rather it is a half quart low and has never used oil before, everytime I park there is an oil puddle under the car so I am assuming it is all from a leak. The original 3.8 is completely stock and has about 138,000 miles on it. Any suggestions from anyone is greatly appreciated!

Valve cover gaskets are notorious for leaking.. That would be my guess... Next would be the oil pan gasket.

I am pretty sure it is not oil pan gasket, looks like its coming from higher, I was thinking maybe Valve covers, I will check that out this weekend, thanks a bunch!

I recently had to replace my rear main seal. The blowback was so intense there that oil had been blowin up onto the engine and hood.

I don't think it is the rear seal then, not getting to bad of blowback, I am really thinking that it is probably the valve covers. Is there anything that would be a good idea to do while I have the valve covers off? I was thinking maybe go ahead and do motor mounts since I have to pull the left one off to get the valve cover off (or atleast I think I do) is there anything else that I might as well replace while I am at it, other than valve cover gaskets of course.

I didn't really want to start a new thread so I will just throw this in here, my car has a really odd whine when idleing, sounds about like a powersteering pump but the powersteering fluid is full and it does it constantly, not just when turning, can anyone tell me what might be causing this noise as well? Its not bad just a little annoy plus everyone always comments on how loud my car is at idle. and I know part of it being loud is the CAI but it made noise before I put the CAI on there so that can't be it.

The whine could be one of your idler pulleys. Get a long wooden dowl or very long screwdriver. With the engine running place the dowl/screwdriver on a non rotating part of each pulley you can reach. Put the tool to your ear and listen for which one is making the odd noise. Be very careful when working around the moving parts of the motor because you can hurt your self.

When the valve covers are off it's a perfect opertunity for a rocker swap smile

haha I thought about rockers but I don't really have alot of spare cash. About how much do rockers run? And what rockers would I need to run on an otherwise stock car, besides CAI

And I will try that listening to the pulley's thing, I was thinking it was probably internal instead of a pulley noise so I hadn't checked that out yet
