I have a 2000 Grand Prix SE with about 110k miles on it. Its been acting weird lately and heres how it started. 1. If I was idling at a stop light or etc. it would buck....and my rpm's would rise and fall with the bucking. Then it would mysteriously rev up and fix the problem and run fine. It wouldn't do this often. 2. Lately, its been having hard starts. As if it struggles to start. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the alternator because my stereo pulls alot off of it and maybe its put a death wish on the alternator. I also have a bad pressure control solenoid but thats not real biggy is it? Pressure gets off maybe once every 3 months but a quick shut off for 5-10 seconds fixes the pressure. What could this problem be? Any input is greatly appreciated. Experts, feel free for recommendations.

I'd almost bet money on a vacuum leak. Start looking there.

You're gonna want to get your PCS replaced. Without it working, your PCM can't control line pressures in the transmission so by avoiding that, you're probably getting a trans that's weakier by the day.

Not sure what you mean when you say "pressure gets off once every three months". I would think that either it works or it doesn't.

Well if It seems that its random when the pressure is becomes off or sometimes when i drive over long periods of time. This solenoid controls the transmission fluid pressure. When the pressure gets off, it will kick when shifting gears. What i do is i find a nice place to stop, turn the car off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on and it runs smoothly again.

couple of ideas , if you have an oiled air filter, maybe the TPS is clogged....consider the Cat converter....when they start to go they can cause erratic engine behaviour....

my air intake wasnt connected securely, infact part of it was exposed and i could see the filter. So i simply reconnected and secured it to both my throttle body and my air filter chamber, no problem!
Thanks for the help, that seemed to have solved the problem!

I was right.... big vacuum leak! :p Unlike the 3800s, the 3100 has a separate MAF before the TB. It was really messing up the readings.
