Hi yall new to the site and looking for info. I own a '99 GTP and have been itching for a vette just do not want to spend the $$ for it. I love my Pontiac and think I might just start modding it. I am not familiar with whats hot and whats not so please help with Ideas. It is stock now and the gas mileage is running about 18/20mpg in the city. Is this normal. Fuel filter is fresh, plugs and wires are fresh(cept I put in platinum and see this is a no no. I will be a changin them this weekend.) Tranny fluid is fresh but went awhile being dirty and I am noticing a shimmy going for 2 and 3 gears. All in all nothing worrying me to awfull much, just wanted to know about after market parts and such. Thanks in advance

Welcome! City driving that is pretty much what to expect. And depends on your accelerations, and really how you drive it. Check out the FAQ and do some searching. Plenty of info will be found and lots will be gone over many times. If not, feel free to ask.

No, ZZP is one of the biggest Vendors for the grand prix. But exhaust mod, the ubend delete, is the highest priority mod usually for these cars.

By doing the exh mod, you will also hafta do the CAI mod to net the most gains for torque and efficiency. And sound. Oh the sound of a otherwise stock GT with a CAI...thank you Slick!

ask as you go, really.
CAI: Cold Air Intake. Wizaired and K&N are the most used manufactured. There are plenty of DIY write-ups on making your own.
exh: exhaust
PCM: Power/Primary Control Module. Also called the computer. Our cars have 2, that I've counted. There's also the BCM (Body Control Module).
res: resonator. Just in front of the cat
cat: catalytic converter. Turns bad exh into more eco-friendly exh.
d/p: down pipe. Goes from the collectors to the res
the others in 20gtp02's sig are all mfrs or model names.

How about the scanners to check for codes? Is this something I can get into being a person with rare sense, because common sense is just all to common.

lol. a scanner is pretty cheap. Pretty much any car parts store will have a OBDII scanner. What I think you're looking for is real time scans that tell you what your car is doing, such as fuel trims etc. Those are tuners. DHP made one called the Powertuner. There are others. Dont ask me what those are. Some are better than others. Again, a search around this site will yield great results.
Tuning is not all that easy, and you have a distinct possibility of frying your PCM. Have a spare to tune and keep your OE PCM just in case you make a bad tune or fry the computer and need to return to stock.

You can go to most local autoparts stores and have your car scanned for codes. Come back here and we can diagnose the issue for you. http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/dtcobd2p.html#pow
There are also two Tuning devices that can change just about anything with your grand prix computer, PCM. One is the discontinued PowerTuner, and the other is the HPTuner.

All 97-03 cars had the Series II motors. The 04-08 cars got the Series III.
By the way, welcome to the site.

I want to start with exhaust and intake. Maybe not the whole exhaust system but definitely the down pipe. And suggestions on the cold air intake system would be appreciated. What are the favorites for both?

Welcome. This forum is great for finding information about the GP You can either make your own CAI box (directions in FAQ i think) or you can purchase one. I have a Thrasher that the guy threw in when i purchased my wheels from him. It adds a nice look under the hood and it sounds awesome under WOT. ^old pic but you get the idea, the engine mounts are painted now Other favorites include K & N and Wizaird. You could just do a fender well intake which doesnt require making a box. All it requires is some pvc, a filter, and a little time. Search fenderwell intake and im sure you will find a write up on how to make it. As for the dp, most people will probably say the ZZP. I dont have one, but would really like one.
