Mine looks this way too. I guess I shouldn't bother just cleaning it as I had planned. I thought for sure it was salt too. I just bought the car and it is from Indiana (I'm in Michigan), so salt makes sense, but it should wash off. Are you in a salt using state? The rest of my car is very clean with no noticable salt residue. Perhaps it isn't salt. Have you tried painting the insulation?

I'm in the lake effect area of lake erie (east of cleveland), so I dont know if salt could be any worse here.
i hosed the crap out of the thing and it didnt change it after it dried.
havent painted it...wondering if it would look like crap?

It all depends n what kind of paint you use Of course black would be the only color.

the stuff is pretty fragile too. its all lightweight so it's OK, but when soaked with water, it holds it like a sponge and weights A LOT. so when i was holding it up, wet, the stuff almost tears.

maybe a flat black paint on all of it, and a glossy ret for the stencil? now to figure out how to stencil....

Painting will look like crud. It's too irregular and plus the matting doesn't take paint very well. Best bet is to replace it. I wouldn't recommend driving around with out it the engine temp might discolor your hood. Not sure what reflectix would do to under hood temps. One way to cool it off in there would be to put a 2-3 inch hole in each fender neer the top and put a small electric fan exhausting the hot air out the holes you made. Or just get your self a new hood with heat extractors smile
