Boy, I laid it to this ZO6 today...lol...actually, I was behind him and he started to take off slowly, then noticed I was on his ass then started speeding up when I got into the other lane and once I was in the other lane he took off...and I kept up with him for the most part I was not even a car length behind him when he started to slow down...

Nice! Holy crap, a Z06?!?!!
We had a guy here that had similar mods to yours and did a similar game with a Vette on the freeway. However, the Vette couldn't pass HIM!

In the end, the Vette owner had him pull over because he wanted to see what was under the hood of the 4-dr grocery-getter and he couldn't beat. They chatted it up for a bit then went their separate ways.

Now I don`t want to start some crap or anything but are you sure he was WOT?, I mean don`t get me wrong I think that the GTP is a strong runner (I own one) but I don`t see a 3 in pulley or intercooler or 2 1/2 in headers or oversized valves with titanium springs listed on your ride, with all the stuff you have listed you might be close to 300 HP at the flywheel, but to think that you can go neck & neck with a 400 HP fibergalss car with a carbon fiber hood is a little much isn`t it, now like I said I don`t want to get anything started but just give the benefit of the doubt that maybe he din`t down shif or something, I wouldn`t go Z06 hunting just yet if I were you.

Yeah, I agree with blowngp. Don't get me wrong- I'm not doubting your car AT ALL. The ZO6 is pretty damn fast, but it's like anything else; you need to be in the right gear. It could be that he stayed, in lets say, 5th gear from 6th, and you were down in 2nd. Many Corvette manual trans drivers don't really know what they're doing all the time with their shifting. Don't get upset; we aren't trying to burst your bubble!

I would have to agree with the previous posts...I know being an older driver myself (and most vette owners are) they like to play with their cars but seldom let them rip for all they are worth. I also agree with what was said that for you to give that kind of showing, give the weight and displacment difference between these two cars is damn impressive any way you slice it. But it still doesnt change the fact that there is probably an 80-100hp difference involved here, and thats a lot of ponies...let me just close by saying that I love the C5 corvette but I'd be pretty friggin happy to be driving a nice roomy, sporty sedan that goes like a rocket...namely YOUR car!!! (green with envy:)

No no...don't close it...I'm laughing over here...As you can see in my post, there is an "lol" there...I actually meant to type that I was pretty sure he wasn't at WOT. I mean...I think my car has balls, but I'm smart enough to know that I'd get eaten by a ZO6...I wouldn't even be able to keep up with a C5...Please don't read my comment and think of me as a ricer driving a GP...I have mucho respect for ZO6's and Vette's and was actually looking at one today! There's a 2003 with 10K miles on it for 38,000!!!! I wanna trade!!

I thinkallofus atone time or another have had a little fun playing with someone else we knew was out of our league. Even tho we know going in we're gonna get our butt whipped, its still fun to see how we fare...and maybe (like this time) we gain some mutual respect. Its like the old saying goes, "I dont wanna fugg with him, I just wanna dance!" cool

We have this one road (91 Street) here on the southside of Edmonton, and that seems to be the only place that I've found that people want to race me!

It's a nice open divided road that's got a 70 km/h (50 mph??)

I've had a Mustang that I beat pretty easily, must've been a V6, a Sentra SE-R Spec V (he got spanked), even a BLAZER!!! Not a Trailblazer, not the Trailblazer with twin turbos (concept in MTFeb2002?), just a regular BLAZER!!!

One of these days, I know I'll lose...she's pretty well stock, but she's a factory freak!

Lol...I know what I can and can't beat...but last night was fun...I was just driving up my street when I saw a new Mustang pull of and cut me off then pull into the left turning lane. I saw it had dual exhaust so I figured, GT. I pulled into the other left turning lane and looked over to see that it was a Cobra..Convertible. All the blood kinda left my face...the light turned green and he turned the corner quickly (he was on the inside) so I turned it up...we jumped the gun at the same time (You gotta love the modded GTP's 30 roll) And I had him for a split second, then kept up with him until about 55 where we had to slow down b/c of traffic, but I could see him start to pull on me...I got him where my car performs the best (30-55) and he pulled up next to me once we were clear of traffic and screamed "What the hell do you have in that thing???!!! I've NEVER had a Grand Prix pull on me like that!?" I said..."Supercharged 3.8L modded" He said, well yeah this has one of those too, but you pulled on me! That car's bad ass" Now how many people get told by a Cobra owner that? I'm not joking on this one either...but he was about 35 or so, so I know he knew what he was doing...anybody else raced a Cobra? A new one.

My neighbor had an 04 Cobra HT manual. With a smaller pulley, intake, pcm and exhaust it pulled 426 RWHP and 428 RWTQ. (saw the sheet)

He let me drive it and I was able to break the tires loose in 2nd and 3rd WITH the traction control ON. The car was a Monster. I was shaking when I got out of it. Even with drag radials he had big traction problems. I sure as heck wouldnt mess with one unless like some have said I wanted to see how little and how fast his tail lights could get.

It was a nice car but the driving position was HORRIBLE, at least for me and the shifter was in a terrible position.

Yeah, I guarantee if those cars wouldn't have been there...I would have black on my white car from his rubber once I hit 2nd gear, my car almost dies it seems like...someone needs to find a way to fix that...so the RPM's don't go to negative 4,000,000 when it shifts into second...

Ok here are all the times for the vettes 90-02. Is your cam in yet? Get the cam in and the supporting mods, headers and 3" or smaller pulley then you should be able to beat a Z06.

get a pcm try the new intense stage 1. My friend got one and loves it. He says it is noticeably better than the DHP.

Isn't the Z06 a mid 12 qtr mile car from the factory? This is a totally different class of vehicle. It doesn't cost LS1 owners more than a grand to get their low 13 second 6 spd Z28's or Firebirds into the 12's. How much do you think it would take to get a mid 12 second Z06 into the 11's? I would not race him from a roll, a stop, or off a cliff. I would not race him for a spliff. I do not like green eggs and ham. I would not race those Vettes Sam I am.(somebody said this was a family board. I wrote that in case my 4 year old wanted to post).

I highly doubt I can beat a Z06 with my cam, with headers, and a smaller pulley WITH an Intercooler! It's just got too much balls...I'm just going to have to trade in for a Z06...only solution....no, but...I SWEAR, I'm not lying about the Cobra!

An older guy in his sixties, down the road from me, has an 03 Cobra that he bought when the first ones came out. I've tried to get him to race me but no luck. He hardly drives it and leaves it parked in his yard all year. I hurts to look at it just sit there covered in snow and dirt and rain and more snow and then more rain, etc...

don`t try the same stunt on a 04 Cobra if you don`t wanna get creamed, never the less nice job on the 03 snake.

As a fellow NYer I'm offended about the "OLD GUY" stuff. We have some pretty nice rides hid away for sun shiny days. Living in NY allows us only limited time for rompin and stomping! At this age its about all we have left. cool While I cann't touch my 70 yr old buddies vette with the GTP, the first 1/8th mile is always mine with the Typhoon! hammer

I just had a mid 90 civic try and race me. He had his hood off and i dont know what he did with the exhaust cause it was louder than most. He kept riding next to me and kept revving his lawnmower. We were at about 40 when I gave it enough gas to down shift at the same time he gunned it. I flew right by with the peddle about half way down and just got in front of him to let him know. What is it with these ricers. I want to find a sticker that says this sticker gives me 20 more HP!

I'm with Hercman, I'll race anyone anytime. Half the time I know I'm gonna lose, sometimes I feel I have a shot. I just like getting the other guy going to a point where he'll just gun it and I'll get to see him fly by. I like knowing that I have a somewhat fast car, and seeing how fast other cars are.

Tell me if I'm wrong...but the '03 and '04 Cobra's have the exact same engine in it? Including the supercharger? In any matter, I'm not sure that it wasn't an 04. I just know that he said it was supercharged...

Our cars are torque monsters especially down low. He shouldnt have any problem keeping up till about 60mph

I did not say that you didn`t keep up with him for a short period of time, I was refering to the strech, if your are "content" with keeping up for 2 seconds or so, then more power to you, I don`t concider a kill untill the snake is dead.

1974 plymouth roadrunner aka satellite, my neighbor had it

it had a bubble hood with a 440-4 sticker on the bubble hood and above the numbers were GTX.

it was an auto with no guts to it but all the potential in the world...
shocked aka sleeper.

i would have bought it but i bought his low mileged
garaged kept in so calif 1970 hemi-fully optioned except for auto trans road runner.

any one wanna go down memory lane with me on this one now. so you know it started at a early age hammer thanks for spring... wink

lol blown...okay, now you're just putting words into my mouth. I said nothing about a kill...I was just stating a fact. The word kill nor anything like it ever came out from these hands. I actually used the words "kept up" several times.

you wanna hear a break your heart story.

I love Roadrunners, esp the 71-72s but never had the brains to buy one cheap in the early 80s, or a GTO or anything else worth driving. What is worse, my best friend was an auto body tech who rebuilt cars in his spare time, and his father owned a junkyard to boot! Can you say free parts and almost free labor while learning a thing or two. I dont know WTF I was thinking or doing . withstupid

That sucks. My dad had a 67 convertible vette white with red interior with a 427. They traded it in for a van cause my mom was pregnant with me. I still tell them the vette was more imortant than me.

Chico,
do you really want us to know this info? I have a couple of 8 tracs in the attic that are pretty old. I can't bring myself to throw them away. I'm waiting for a comeback. But back to Vettes. I ripped a new one on a C4 today. Maybe an 89 or 90. Oh yeah he was flooring it. The race lasted 15-20 seconds. I had the speedo pinned at 110. We started at 75 and finished with me ahead by more than a few car lengths. Life is good.

Ok my Vette story...

I had a '99 Red Convertable with a black top. No real mods - it would run mid-low 13s.... anyway my wife and I where coming back from a family reunion in PA, I was driving.. we hit the route 15 bridge going over the susquahana (spelling?) river and I Nailed it - I hit 137mph (on the HUD) and looked up the hill on the other side of the bridge and my wife said I turned white as a ghost blush ... in the median was a car frown I hammer the brakes but figured by then "the Man" had got me doing WAYYYYYY over the 55mph speed limit. In that instance I saw myself spending the night in a PA jail.

BUT Turns out it was someone doing a illegal U-turn smile -- I drove the speed limit the rest of the way back home to MD thumbsup

I loved that car. But I love my Comp-G also smile

Talk about a good scare. I've done that before. But never going that fast.

I don't have any real corvette racing stories. But My father has owned 11 Corvettes since he got his license. He had all new models up until '83 when I was born and he had to buy a bigger car. So finally he decided to buy another Corvette. Instead of going new he picked up a '64 Stingray convertible. Absolutely mint, it had less than 50k miles on it. He ended up selling it 4 months before I got my permit. I didn't mind though because he picked up this:

http://www.andrewpoirier.com/VehicleAlbum/images/Dad\'s%20Jaguar%20No%20Top_jpg.jpg

He said it was more practical. Even though he sold it two years later with only 14k miles on the odometer. About 4000 of them were mine.

My father in law owns a red 66 that he restored from the ground up, I won't go into detail, but serial #`s match and its got a 3000 k paint job, the car looks like just rolled off the show room floor, that should give you an idea of what I`m talking about... needless to say I`m the first one in line when he kicks the bucket. He also owns an red 86 mustang GT with 8000 original miles (he bought it new) and no there is no 0 missing in that figure..it just got a couple of dings from the mover over the years, but everything is original, (including the tires).the only things he has changed have been battery, winshield washer fluid, and oil.so I guess my question is what should I go for, the stang or the vette

It was 1959 and the roads were damp that night. Left a "Big Boy" with a new '59 Pont. tri-power. Both got on it and I passed him going sideways when we spotted the law going the other way in a '57 Ford. He turned into another town while I turned into the law's town. Thought he was going to kill himself trying to keep up, so I stopped. There was a town offical laying shakening in the back seat and the ridding law said "I have never seen a car run away from us so fast (57 FI Vette). Guess where I spent that damp night in 1959? confused

My father in law has a 2002 ZO6. I have driven it......once, and it is fast. I know you're having fun with this and that's what its all about. But unless you are running in the 12.30's or less, you will get beat by a stock ZO6. The car has too much power for the stock tires. For example, last time out it was 50 degrees at the track. I rode along and he had a good launch. however at the top of 1st gear, the tires came loose and shook the car severely. He granny shifted to 2nd and it basically did the same thing. Granny to 3rd, some more hop, in and out of the throttle. Finally tripped the lights at 13.60 @ 116mph. As you can see by the trap speed, these cars make power on the top end too.

I got a funny story about a Z06:

I was driving my father's 2003 Audi A6 2.7T (automatic) one night awhile back. I found myself at a light next to a Z06 with at least an aftermarket exhaust.

Now, the Audi's have an automatic (autoStick on the side) that goes PRNDS, with the "S" being "sport" mode (if you want to go to low gear, you've gotta go into AutoStick mode). In "S" mode, with the traction control turned off, you can powerbrake a decent (although not spectacular) AWD launch.

So, I was next to a modded Z06 in this Audi. I powerbraked the shit out of the car, and launched as hard as I could. I beat the Z06 across the intersection, then heard a loud-ass roar as the 'vette passed me like I was standing still. I found it amusing laugh

Dude, my 'Stang does that kind of stuff on the track. If you bang the 1-2 shift hard enough, it feels like the back of the car is about to pass you on anything but drag radials. However, my best time in the 'stang was 13.6 @ 102...Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I have even half a chance against a Z06. Just saying that those characteristics are exhibited by a lot of higher-torque RWD cars. It sounds like the "shaking" you described was severe wheelhop, inherent with IRS RWD cars. The 'vette is designed for handling/AutoX-ing/Road Racing, not drag racing :p

Funnest thing is to "borrow" my dads BMW X5 4.8l

- That thing will blow the doors of Mustangs no problem, and they just can't figure out how an SUV beat them at the light :-D

After the track last night, I was cruising my town...It must have been Camaro night or something lol...I ended up racing THREE Z28's and ONE SS...I Smoked all three Z28's...All of them had exhaust work and one had Quad exhaust in the middle like a Vette and he said he had gears done to it...All of them were so shocked and embarassed...I talked to all of them after I raced them...The SS was a little more difficult, but I got him to by a little less than a car length up to 77 mph.....Well, fellas? There's an LS1 for ya...still doubt me? Check out my time slip... http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/412000-412999/412665_15_full.jpg ...that 1/8 time translates to 13.68 in the 1/4...the new GTO runs it in 13.8 (MANUAL)

Camaro SS= Heavier and about 70 less horses than the Z06, you`l end up blowing up tranny before you start to smell the vette`s exhaust fumes

I spanked a Zo6. I was coming up I-85 and ended up behind a new zo6. It was some guy and his girlfriend or wife. I started riding his rear a lil and when we hit an open zone I went over into the next lane to pass. He hammered it, and so I did the same. We started about 75mph and I was about 5 car lengths on him by 130mph. So the guy pulls up next to me again and hammers it, I hit it and let off a few times teasing him, then I nailed it and pulled away...
So much fun riding a ZX6R Ninja..............

I pick up my GTP in a week... Very excited, and cant wait!!!
