I got the performance shift and assembly last month just wondering about the wiring. can i plug the it into the plug of the shifter assembly so the ground should be taken care of and then splice into the red wire to the pcm, or not plug it into the assembly and run a separate ground and run the red wire to the pcm?

Should you really be messing with wires anymore? I think you're fired from that job.

Have you looked up any write ups? I have no idea on how to do it, just really bored tonight.

it will have ZERO effect on your car. Unless you installed a GTP transmission, and then also either have a GTP PCM, OR an aftermarket PCM it will not work.

2 reasons.

1 1997 BA$TARD year, the GT got the Vacuum modulated trans, so the trans shift pressure is changed by vacuum variances.

2 even if you had a 1998+ you'd need someone with a POWERTUNER to enable performance shift in the PCM OR buy aftermarket pcm.

wiring the performance shift wire on pin 21 will do nothing more than kill time.

JUST wanted to make sure you knew this before getting into it too deep.

I hope it wasn't expensive lol !

Looking at Jaybur's post is looks as if though you're already in deep by purchasing it .. unless of course you have the GTP tranny and a PCM ?

he can add the settings but your trans is not going to listen.

The write ups I have seen have all been for 98+ grand prixs.

so unless I missed something, its not going to work.

98+ got the updated trans, non vacuum modulated.

I could not even do the DIY shift kit in mine, the accumulator was different. (referring to my 97 gt)

and what RED wire are you "splicing" ?

it is a dark blue wire for one, and 2 it needs to be ADDED to the pcm, not spliced. Pin 21 is vacant to non GTP pcms 98-2000 and all GP's 2001-2003 (for this gen anyway)

i have a red, positive and black, negative, wire going to the knob, i know the opposite end of the wire needs to be added to the pcm

actually the red is not a "positive" its just a color.

the pcm needs to see a ground to trigger the "perf shift". all the switch does is complete the ground.

some people just ground the wire under the hood by the pcm to keep it on permanently.

Some people say a GT has performance shift on all the time, which is not true. the pcm uses the "normal" shift values only, so how that makes it performance shift, is beyond me! The GT has different gearing, more of a "performance" gearing ratio, but its not in "performance shift" mode in the pcm.

either way you need a PT to turn it on, hpt does not do that at this time. Or the box tunes seem to have it turned on as well.

but let me know how it works out, I just know the trans is different in the 97GT. but best of luck anyway!

when you have the console out, you will see the connector for the shifter knob. oddly enough the color changes to dark blue, so I do not know why they used "red" on the knob itself, but maybe it was cheaper to buy it that way??

ALSO, just another FYI

the tables for normal shift and perf shift are IDENTICAL on a gt pcm. so even if you "enable" it in the pcm, you still need to alter the actual table to get any change.

Even on a GTP the tables are not that much different. it is different enough to notice, but not drastically different.

and you can't just plop the GTP tables in either, or you will be shifting well into the redline.

I am just dropping info as I think of it....

you can take the GTP shift pressure tables, just not the shift rpm/mileage due to different trans gearing. however, there are spreadsheets on the PT site that will allow you to convert GTP settings to GT gearing.

Out of curiosity, how will changing the shift pressure tables affect a vacuum modulated trans??

The only way to adjust for firmer shifts is to buy an adjustable vacuum modulator,do'nt waste your time with the whole performance shift thing.Chico.
