I need some advise please.
Last week I took the Grand Prix to the dealership for the tune up/transmission fluid change/belts changes and radiator flushed. The car started fine, the internal fan worked (except for level 1) and the car ran great. The routine stuff was done at 127,000 miles. (A little background - I used to drive 90 miles roundtrip to/from work - these were all highway miles. The dealership advised me to have the oil changed every 5,000 miles due to the nature of the driving I was doing. They weren't surprised when it came in for the tune-up when it did.)
Less that a week later, the car doesn't want to start, it acts like it has and then dies out quietly. Tonight I was at a stoplight and the car started to idle in a manner to which I have never had a car idle before! It was almost as if the engine wanted to jump out of the frame. It was so rough - it was unsettling. Then I smelled something burning - it didn't smell like oil, (I've smelled that on my old chevelle I used to own) but I don't know what it was. Then when my husband shut the engine off we heard this aweful clunking noise.
Should I drive it to the dealership - I'm affraid I might do more damage or should I have it towed? Has anyone ever had this experience before?
fyi..the head gasket had to be replaced just after it went out of warrenty a few years ago - but the dealership took care of it due to it was a problem with manufacture. That caused other problems that I had to pay for.
thanks....

I would call the dealership where you had repairs last and ask them what to do, lol, i dunno if this helps or not. Good Luck!

No check engine light being set? The harsh vibration sounds almost like a cylinder not firing.

I agree with Redgie, I'll bet it was something they did or possibly didn't do (like didn't reconnect a vacuum hose - which would cause a rough idle). Let them retrace their steps and figure out what happened. What ever is going on is probably in or around the area they were working in.

Vacuum leak, spark plug wire dangling, broken plug wire/s. A few things can cause a rough idle.

Thanks for the responses - they are going to help me deal with the dealership.

Fyi..the check engine light is not on. I drove it to the dealership this morning (a mile away) and when I started it up - it fired up and stayed running until I put my foot on the brake to shift into gear. I ended up starting it in N to get it going. The idle problem still exists and is as nasty as before - this morning we noticed smoke coming from the tailpipes.
IMO - I think they failed to do something (intentional or not - I don't know). But I'm not going back to the dealership. Never again.
Thanks again everyone!
I really appreciate your feedback!
