Anyone else get a recall notice on their 1997 Grand Prix GT? Apparently during agressive braking oil could drip onto the manifold and if the manifold is hot enough could ignite the oil which in turn could cause the spark plug wires catch on fire.

The fix is to reroute the spark plug wires. Seems to me they should fix the cause of the oil dripping onto the manifold...

yes, there are a few threads on this.

both useless recalls but the first one you atleast got a new gasket out of.

might as well save the gas you'll waste by driving to the dealership and order some injector O-rings from ZZP instead and fix the real problem.

yep, they just updated the recall to affect all 3800 series 2 engines, not just the GTP. However, non-GTPs only get the spark plug wire reroute, not the front valve cover gasket like the GTPs got. Somehow I don't think moving the spark plug wires is going to do any good.

So are they going to issue a new recall for the GTPs that were already fixed to reroute the plug wires?

No. The GTPs got new front valve cover gaskets, so the oil doesn't leak. Therefore, the spark plug wires don't need to be moved.

Of course, that's not what causes the fires, so it's irrelevant.

I went into GM and got my recall done last year on my GTP. I drove the car in with a spark plug retainer and drove away without one. That is probably all they will do yours, remove it.
