I stopped by the exhaust shop this afternoon and chatted with my guy about my persistent droning and asked his opinion.
He stated that he thought my biggest problem was my hi-flow cat and U bend delete. He thought that by allowing more flow is what is causing the noise issue. He also said he has seen more than one truck come in his shop that orginally had no muffler and after adding the new cat was suddenly raucous loud. He also thought my Corvette resonators were basically "tin cans" that gave no sound control at all...the Hushpower being the only thing resembling a muffler in my system. he felt that adding some kind of chambered muffler out back will offer any kind of help.
I'm actually surprised that the Hushpower alone wont quell the sound with just some resonator tips out back... I have a pair of chambered muffs sitting in the garage but if I have him install them and its as quiet as stock I know I'm not gonna be happy.
I also noticed in many of the pics of cat-back systems on the market that the factory split in the rear has been replaced some some form of Y pipe...since the stock setup is closer to a T, I wonder if adding a Y might kill some of the reverb in the pipe that might be causing the droning...any sound engineers here with an opinion on that theory? laugh

You got me stumped dude. If I were you, I would first try some resonated tips and go from there.

And about the Y-pipe, I don't think it will yield any noticable sound difference.

Good luck T-Bat.

He has resonated tips, he has no muffs.

Hmmm... Makes since to me, with no chambered muffler, I can see how he would think it would give you a hollow drone... That would give me a headache driving around like that? or is it not bad, just your tired of it?

actually the only time it does it bad is high gear at about 2000rpm...sometimes I just try and drive a little faster or slower to move the rpm and kill the tone...but blast it all if your on the highway and doing right around the speed limit, thats where the engine seems to live.

The Corvette resonators actually look like a muffler with the twin outlet tips made on...all stainless...but if you look down the twin outlets there are two short perforated tubes and then an empty casing at the rear...where you can also see the inlet tube...maybe that empty area is acting like an echo chamber...I really dont know but I gotta try something cuz I aint drvin this thing across country next summer with it buzzing my teeth no

Have a set up to Bolt on a muffler for long trips and a straight pipe for just around town?

i can't offer any suggestions because I hate my car's exhaust too, no matter what I try. I'm tired of trying, so I'm going back to stock soon.

i suppose on the one hand I shouldnt gripe since the hi-flow cat and the Ubend delete are obviously doing their job...the Hushpower is still a straight-thru muffler but I guess its quieter than a glasspack...maybe adding these cambered muffs out back will do the trick...especially if I ever plan to go pressurized, which would mean a 3" DP which could raise the volume level even more...I'll post some pics and info next week when I get it changed over...I think I am going with the new "Y" pipe as well, even if it doesnt help with sound it would have to flow better.

Papa GP has spoken..."pricey but not ricey"...gotta love it thumbsup

Actually these "fully welded mufflers" I got from Summit Racing appear to be very much like Magnaflows in their design so hopefully they will deliver the results similar to yours...if so I'll be backing you all the way.

I was trying to decide between the FM's, MagnaFlows, and Borlas...

Haven't decided yet...

I've looked on the Flowmaster website and they say themselves that their 40 & Super 40 muffs can have interior resonace...Borlas are pricey units (always have been) although they are supposed to be good and durable. I have never purchased magnaflows but if this works on my ride then I'll be Chico's wingman anytime. laugh

(sounds like some of that Top Gun Aviator call sign jargon..."Chico" and his wingman "T-Bat"...pricey but not ricey...turn and burn baby) lol

"Now that was some of the best flying I've seen yet...right up to the part where you got killed. You never, never leave your wingman."

That has to be my fave line from the whole flick

Herc, I'll be happy to fly escort for your C-130...just as soon as I pick up my jet black P-38 cool ( modded up with tinted canopy and twin rolls-royce merlin V-12s) lol

I'm afraid I dont have vid equipment so you may have to suffer in that department. My wife is the photographer so all the camera equip is hers...her weapon of choice is a digital SLR which can do lots of things but vid isnt one of them. I'd personally like to have a digi vid recorder but I'm not spending that cash when there are mods still to be done laugh (we have to have priorities)
