I was wondering if anyone has experimented with wider tire sizes on the 17" rims. I was wondering if a 235 tire would work well on the 17" rims without rubbing the fenderwells or affecting the turning radius. The slightly wider tires would look much nicer..

I think the stock rims are 6.5" wide. The 225 is already stretching the limit, in terms of tire width, I would not go much further than that if you are a spirited driver.

Although if you find a willing tire store, I have seen up to 245 on the stock rim (but it did look puffy and not at all attractive, IMHO).

Plus more width is not good all the time. You can end up hurting cornering. A 235 will fit, at a mild sacrifice to handling. I would stick with what you got and or upgrade wheels and tires. You can go all the way to a 255 on 17's with no problems. Although the all for looks GT I have will be footed with 20x8.5 wearing 245-35 tires from pirelli. And if spring rolls around and I decided to keep the less than efficient at taking off decently quick GP GT it will get the Inferno Air damn and CF spoiler. However with the car and house fighting for my wallet I am honestly very split on what will happen but 20's are fo sure because they can come off easily when I decide to get rid of it. More than what you asked for but I do that from time to time.

Hey man, I can give you a run for the money on the somewhat verbose messages, heh heh. Yeah, I'm aware of the sacrifice in handling when you exceed the width of the rim too much, especially with the stiffer spring rates and harder bushings. I think these wheels look like they could definitely take a 235 without much compromise on handling - 245 is probably too much for sure. Since I'm not planning on lowering this ride or doing any running on race courses, I thought that the improved looks of a slightly wider tire was a good idea. I used to have 285's on all 4 Cobra R rims (17x9) and really like that fat squatty look and it handled great (for a solid axle rear). I guess I won't do this until the stock treads wear out and I've heard a few testimonials that 235's handle well on these cars.

yeah 235 are very common on our cars. Really when it comes to what you like/want it has to be what you like/want becuase what I may or may not do may or may not work for you......245 would be pushing it tho i think on the wheels. Even with lowering the car IMO looks really good that way you would have no problems with rubbing. You can do 20's with 245/35 and drop without problems.

Maybe im more of a backroads racer myself but im more than happy with the look/feel of the 225's on the GP's, I wont sacrifice my handling for all the look in the world although I agree some 245's with some 20" chromies would look pimpisle, guess it comes down to whether u like draggin or hairpins, course if its point A to B whats the point of mods right?

To either get there in style or get there quick. Even only wiht a GT with 20's it will do both.....
