From the November'02 Motor Trend:
GM's first Performance division car will be a "HOT" V-8 version of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix. The engine powering this beauty will be an all-new multivalve V-8 with a displacement of around 4.0L making 300+ HP.
This multivalve wonder also incorporates "variable valve timing". It will retain front-wheel drive due to cost restraints. An AWD was considered.
This car will debut within a year of the introduction of the all-new 2004 Grand Prix.

I really don't think this report is accurate.
If they will be putting a V8 in a GP, it will most likely be a small block. They would never put a caddy motor in a GP (the only GM v8 multivalve)

I've seen the article in the Nov. '02 issue of Motor Trend, pg 24. I don't like the look of the car too much, they should've left the front end alone. But the 300hp V8 makes up for the syling, if they make a coupe it could be a FWD mustang killer. It hasn't got much less horses than the new 5.7L GTO, wonder why they're bringing them out at almost the same time.

GM doesnt have a car right now with a Big block so we know if will be a small block. ?????? anyways the cadillac is a small block to. it just has the dual over head cam heads. i can c the 4.0 going in the GP. That way gm could excuse itself away from the eaton. less warranty issues. but i say thro a eaton on the 4.0 and letter eat?!?!?! then you would talkin mustanger slaughter vette comp. wooo hooo somebody suggest that
1 more thang....all wheel drive would be bad...

The Cadillac Northstar is NOT a small block. They are VERY different engines.
Again, like I said before, if they put a V8 in the GP it would be the small block, not a Northstar (4 valve, DOHC) engine.

It'd be nice if Pontiac would just drop a TransAm 350 into this GP, but thats just wishful thinking. They don't want to make it RWD for some reason, guess that would make it a "sports car" or something, like its not already.
Doesnt really matter though, no matter what they put under this cars hood, its gonna be fast enough to to take a mustang gt, and hopefully a (pre-2003) Cobra. I just hate mustangs and imports, as long as its faster than them, i dont care what motor its got.

Motortrend (the PREviews / future predictions section) = BS half the time.
Although their REviews aren't half bad.

QB] I just caught up w/ this thread, so forgive me for being so far behind. Question.....Is there such thing as "small blocks vs. big blocks" anymore? I just looked at a buddies Avalanche w/ a 8100 in it....That's like 490ci. The motor looked just like a 5700(350). I've been told "they are from the same LS1 mold" So goes my question.....anyone got an answer? Later now,

The 8.1L (L18) is a big block. It is not the same block as the LS1 - not even near the "same mold". The big block is available in the Chevrolet Avalanche, 2500 HD and 3500 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL all as an option. (I believe) Along with some commercial applications also.
