I just bought my wife an '04 GTP and its a wonderful American made car. I have a few questions about the car though. The car is no doubt a GTP, but what makes it a Comp-G ? The car has the 16" wheels vs. the 17" Wheels. It also has stickers that say "Supercharged" on both front doors and the trunk. However it does have HUD, Tap Shift, and Leather. I have been told that it is a Comp-G, but I am just not totally convinced. The suspension feels pretty stiff, but I am just curious as to what we are working with.

Wonderful car though, we really enjoy it in all its stock glory. But we plan on doing some mods soon. What is the bottom end limits? I have read the tranny is good for about 400 WHP.... but what about the block and heads? The 3.8 has been out for so long, but every gen is different. Thanks for any answers.

I know the bottom end is good for about 600hp. just put a smaller pulley on the supercharger remap the ecu get a wide band o2 sensor k&n drop in filter bigger wheels new boost gauge and you will be pushing 10 psi plus with a 100hp gain

Awesome! We are really looking to make some decent power with the car.... I was thinking somewhere in the range of 350WHP. And the car does have 17" wheels, I went back out and looked at it. And underneath the "GTP" Symbol it says "Competition Group." So I am guessing it may just be a Comp-G.

thats a really nice vette you have overboosted. Seems like you would be more interested in making the vette more powerful than the GTP

Oh my goodness, where to begin here  ?

Competition Group was an option package on the 04 and early 05 GTP models. It featured TAPshift, Magnasteer II, StabiliTrak, 3.29 gearing, red calipers (none of the above were available otherwise on the GTP) and the Infotech package, which was the HUD and the 5 button display, which you could get on a "regular" GTP.

Stickers that say "Supercharged" must have been added by the previous owner, as the only thing on the outside of the car that would say that is a "regular" GTP on the bottom of the right side trunk badge, and you posted that yours says "Competition Group".

Don't know where you heard the tranny lasting with 400whp (must have been a transmission replacement shop) - any additional hp over stock and you're living on borrowed time - maybe say 250whp you'd be OK, but certainly above 300 and every track pass or similar is a Russian Roulette round with the stock tranny eek .

Gunnar, maybe things are different in the Land Of Ice, but Stateside GTP's did NOT have TAPshift unless they were Comp G's (and now TAPshift is ONLY available on the GXP mad ).

Crick's post - All I can say is I hope you're just being silly and not dispensing actual advice.

350whp - can and has been done - fastest route is to replace the supercharger with a turbo. See below links for what's been achieved with various mod combos:

There are guys running numerous 9sec passes on the stock block. 350whp is easy on the stock block&heads. Turbo is one way, a good sized cam for stock heads and a large IC is a nother route. Good luck modding!

i dunno about cliff cherry but these engines were used in the grand nationals (bottom end) and could stand at least 700hp tested, dunno about the tranny but i think they can stand an increase in hp only if used wisely not every accelaration! Our GTP can easily do 12's with these mods. 10psi plus tires means speed. pm me if you have other questions

Awesome.... dont know about the rolleyes from Cliff Cherry though....great writeup man. Anyhow, thanks for all the info. As far as making the Vette more powerful than the GTP, I think a twin turbo setup is more than we plan on making with the GTP smile . I am planning on sticking with the supercharger, there is no sense in replacing it and we won't be pulling our hair out over being at 315 WHP vs. 350 WHP. Its just about having a fun car that can pull pretty decent on the highway. Oh, and I guess since we have the red calipers, 17" Wheels, Tap Shift, and all the other goodies we have a Comp-G.

Replying to both of you; I'm sure y'all can figure out who's who smile :

The rolleyes were for the most part not directed at you (save perhaps for not knowing you had a Comp G until you finally checked the badge on the back wink ) - mostly for the other misinformation on here.

Dunno about the bottom end being the same as the Grand National so I can't comment on that, but I can say for sure that bigger wheels = larger rotating mass = slower times.

And "smaller pulley" + drop in K&N + bigger wheels + some extra gauges + "ecu remap" (whatever that is) = 100hp gain???????? OOOOOOOOOK.

.

The 3.8 GN and the 3800 Series II/III are similar in only two ways:

1) They are both 231ci

2) The connecting rod bolts are the same.

That's it. They are not compatible with each other in any way, shape, or form and nothing will interchange.

Good luck with the new GP Overbosted. I hope you enjoy the car and have fun moding it. If you want good and useful info you sould stop over at clubgp.com and sign up. There are lots of helpful people over there that know what they are talking about and will help you out with any questions you may have. Be sure to read the links that Cliff posted they are very helpfull. Also check out this one LINK Good luck with the new car and that Vet looks very nice.

Thanks for the welcome Cliff. Also you are right, peope were being helpful. I should have said people are more knowledgeable about the 04+ over at clubgp. And traffic does play a part in that.
