On both my cars, I have the 10gal mark memorized. On the GP it's right at the 1/4 tank mark, Stratus it's halfway between half and 1/4. So, I automatically fuel up when I reach that point, mainly for ease in calculating mileage (I'm somewhat anal about it). P.S. Stratus got 28.2 MPG last tank. smile

It's about 2.32 for mid-grade here. frown I go off of mileage more than my gauge at times. I've had to put 13 gallons in at 1/4 and at 1/3 and at almost E before. My gas gauge isn't always the most reliable. Sometimes 1/2 tank is 10 gallons...sometimes 1/4 is.

Nothing wrong with keeping track of gas mileage. I figure it out every time I fill up. I got 17MPG last fill up...before that it was about 16.5...before that I got 15.8 (!!!). Man the cold weather stinks...completely kills my gas mileage. AND I can't drive the Model A, who else is ready for spring?

Maybe...not a really big deal though. Trip works, so every 200 miles or so I fill up. Not gonna dig around and mess with that as long as my fuel pump stays working.

Me and you both. The 23 T Bucket and the 37 Chevy are sitting in my Uncles garage begging to be driven.
I got my gas for 2.25 today, right as they were changing it to 2.49. (for REGULAR) By tommorrow afternoon, they will have it back down to 2.15. I think they just throw a dart at a dart board here and decide how much to gouge on a daily basis. devilsad

For the GTP, I hardly ever fill up and don't pay too much attention to the price of premium since I've got preferred fuels and try to stay away from the "one hose dispenses all" stations.

My work truck on the other hand, I pump the cheapest regular I can find and today it was $2.53....... Oregon has some pretty spendy fuel for some reason.

Tonight, I filled up at $2.59 for premium. And my first tank of gas after the top end swap I averaged 15.8 mpg. However this is untuned and idling poorly so I hope that the tune will put me back up closer to 20 mpg.

Wow $50.01. My tourist town is high prices, but I think I only hit $46.76 the other day. But that depends how many fumes you had left and what I had left. I think I had between 2-3 gals left in the tank. I am complaining, but not as much. I work with my dad, so he drives alot. Except I like to go out of town on the weekends, so that week of usual driving I don't do anymore, gets used up in a weekend, lol. Plus, I have been tuning the car, and getting much more mpg than I ever had.

I think my DIC said I only had about 11 miles left in the "Range" view.

I never drive it that low, but I had to take my wife to a doctors appointment, and I had forgotten to fill up the night before. I just barely made it.

I pumped the T-Bat full of 89 last night with the low fuel light on. $43.72...gee I wonder how much higher it will be by July 4th. I wouldnt mind it if it were really due to high prices but they gouge us like this every summer. Especially when the oil companies continue to post record profits.
There will be no V8 powered car in my future...used or otherwise.

my automotive teacher has a friend that is a shell rep. and he said we should be expecting to pay 4$ a gallon during the summer. he said the goverment is putting more pressure on the oil comp to raise the price of gas hopeing to slow the travel of people. and trying to push people into buying hybrid cars. i am sick of the goverment we need someone new thank goodness there will be an election soon. i need to think about makeing my own gas in the backyard make my own grain alc. lol but yeah it is expected to hit 4$ this summer

That sounds like a load of B.S. to me. Fuel at $4.00 a gallon does three things. One increases the profits of the most profitable business going, two drives the rate of inflation through the roof (bad for economy) and three because cost of living is higher wages will raise accordingly/and or mass layoffs to offset fuel costs(wages will take time to catch up but the layoffs will be immediate hurting the economy even more.) Does that sound like a smart move for a government trying to dig it's self out. I know our government doesn't have the brightest people in it but there are some good ones.

Rember there is alot more to oil usage then just joe schmoe driving around.

Ohh as for the source a "Shell rep" sounds more like he's planting a seed to justify fuel costs going through the roof and redirecting the blame to some one other then those who really drive the price.

Yep, the government has little influence on the price of gasoline... it's not Bush's fault, contrary to popular liberal beliefs. How's come no one was blaming it on him late last year when gas prices were below $2/gal once again? I know not even 3 months ago I paid $1.99 for premium.

i know its just not the goverment ..... also has anyone seen the stock prices over the last year for the gas comp. they had huge profits. its just not one thing..... its a bunch of little things that all add up to hit the high gas prices

If gas prices get that bad, I'll start looking for a big gas tank...get with some friends and buy a bunch of gas when it (hopefully) gets back to 1.90s range. Hopefully we could all save a ton of money that way.

$3.28 for premium. I put in $50 and I could of gone more but the pump stopped me at $50 even. With the prices so high, they need to adjust the limits, dang it.

Most pumps I've come across when paying with plastic will only allow $50 per purchase. It has nothing to do with the cost per gallon. It's a safety feature to help prevent exorbanent charges by an unautherized person.

I've only ever seen a plastic pump limit once and that was at $75.

When I paid $50.02 it was on plastic. Maybe they raised their limits since gas prices have gone up.

One gas station I went to had a sign posted on limits, something like $50 for MC and $75 for Visa, or vice versa. Must be company policy or something.

Anyway, $3.09 for premium here.

Even when paying with cash, pumps do have a shut off point. This is to prevent some a$$ from filling up his truck and boat, spending $200 and driving off without paying. Drive offs are a major pain because the police won't do anything about it. My Dad owns a mobil station and has resorted to chasing people down himself.

Not necessarily the truth, Bryant. It's been about a year since I bought a gallon of low-grade stuff for my lawn mower, and it still hasnt turned into gel. I sure wouldnt put it into my car at this point, but it still burns just as well in lawn mower.

I think gas is about 3.16 here in the colorado springs. Last week it was 3.02. My wife said that gas was going to hit $4 this summer. That is crazy. I'm looking at $68 for a full tank. Gotta do some hard budgeting for the family vacation this year....

All of the gas stations in the Kansas City area are prepay. They have what they call "pumpstart cards" that allow you to pump gas then pay for it, but if you drive off they have your vehicle type, license plate #, driver's license number and a few other important things, I'm sure it's cut down on gas and go's.

A week? I've heard a year before, even two, but never a week. Friend of mine got his mom's old car...it sat in a barn for a year, new battery it started right up. We'd use the gas in under a year, so it'd be fine.

If your that worried about storing gas and having it go bad just throw some "stabil" in it. Works good lasts long time.

I didn't say gel. Just said it starts to go bad. It's on a continuum.

ah. do you happen to know about how long before it does turn into gel? I'm sure I could find it, but I am just too busy and lazy to find it myself.

Gas will start to get slimy around 2-3 months. It depends on many, many factors; such as hydrocarbon blend, actual age from refining to now, where it is stored, etc....

Always use stabilizer to be safe. You don't want thick gas in your injectors/carbs.

The problem with "old" gas is it will leave a coat of varnish on everything it comes in contact with. When this happens it will clog fuel passages. Ie carb circuits/jets and injecter tips.

Looking at the thread title... did the original poster use a pummp that wouldn't let him go past $50 in gas??

I just put $53 in my tank the other day. Rediculous. Time to change those spark plugs!

I'm down to a 1/4 tank and saw that gas is 3.43.
But lucky for me, we have gas credit from the grocery store. I can get 3 free fill ups at 50 gallons each. Just waiting for my wife to get low on gas so we could combine tanks and get close to 50 gallons. Does anyone else grocery store offer the same discount. You have to spend over a hundred dollars to get the credit, other wise it's just .10 off a gallon..... laugh

I called the store confirm the free gas and its a promotion that expires at the end of the month. You have to have $300 in credits to get it, afterwards the gas is .10 off a gallon of gas which expires at the end of june if you spend a $100 on groceries.

Yah Walmart has a credit card that gives like $.03 a gallon. Costco usually has very low priced gas, but you have to be a member there.

Not worth it... I'm not signing up for a CC to get gas at 3.26/gal as versus 3.29/gal. You save $0.54 per tank if you're going from empty to full...

For ten cents a gallon maybe.

quiktrip gives u 5 cents a gallon if u use their credit card. You get a 5 cent discount for the first 400 gallons you buy and @ 3.39 for premium...5 cents will add up. I just put $57 in my GTP...and the fuel light came on as I pulled up to the pump.

Actually its not a credit card or a membership thing. All you need is a walmart gift card that you purchase in walmart and you scan that at the pump to get your 3 cents off. It was a decent deal when gas was under $2/gal, so the percentage savings keeps going down as gas prices go up. I used to do it.

That's kind of the way I figure it. I used to do it as well, because when gas was $1.79/gal, it was a pretty nice savings. But now, it's not worth driving across town for me to save $0.54 on a completely empty to completely full fillup. I spend more in gas getting over there. However if they raised the rebate to $0.08-0.10/gal I would definitely go.

Yah that is why I don't get those folks (some I know first hand) that say "No I am driving to X because it is .01-.05$ cheaper than Z right here. I am a huge math person and when I drive I just calculate stuff like crazy with the car, and I know for sure that driving to X is actually going to make me spend more money than going with Z. Some of those people need a reality check.

Are you kidding me? I hope so... because they are robbing everyone else for profit.

OPEC is the biggest group of crooks ever, and Hugo Chavez is right up there as one of the most corrupted, crooked politicians of our time.

Look at the exchange rate for US and Venazuala.

1 US dollar is equal to 2,144 venz. bolivars

So at .12 cents a gallon it costs them 257 VEB. Is that a bargain for them? I don't know

.12 cents is probably a good bit of money for them. Wikipedia (not the most reliable source) said that the average income is $8,900(USD) per capita and 37% of the pop. lives below the poverty line.

It was tongue in cheek. BTW, if you don't like Venezuela, don't buy gas from Citgo (like my dad). Honestly, all the oil companies are overcharging. OPEC might be getting rich, but the oil companies are making record profits... and that's after OPEC has gotten its cut.

So far gas prices have leveled out here around the St Paul/Minneapolis area. Its now at $3.05 or $3.09. But I will tell ya this gas price thing is killing people! It took me $44.00 just to fill my tank the other day! mad I hear that the gas prices may be going up again soon. Talk about price gauging. This is bull if you ask me.

We're all still buying it though. If we all felt strongly enough about it, we should drive less and save money. We're basically whining and complaining to the oil companies, but no one is changing any of their habits or driving less, so why should they lower the price? It's simply supply and demand, there is still a strong demand and they will continue to supply gasoline at whatever price they choose, and we continue to buy.

I agree it sucks, but it's not annoying enough for me to quit driving... love my GP too much! I'll pay it.

Herc, I have altered my driving habits too. Carpooling when possible, and also affected my decision to move closer to work and school for the summer. I don't have any fall living arrangements, though, so I may be back at 'home' with the 45-55min commute into the city. banghead

Since you aren't running a aftermarket PCM, he is saying, you can save a few dollars and run something lower in octane. This brings a question to mind, if running a lower octane at first, might cause slight wear or damage, then using higher octane later, (for pcm reasons or modding) why not start out using high octane like you are doing?

The only reason for using a higher octane is to reduce the potential for knock. Most cars on the market are built with the intent of using 87/89 octane fuel.

In most cases a car that was built to use a lower octane fuel will not benefit from using a higher octane. It doesn't have any effect on wear or damage to the engine as long as it was designed for it.

The GP GTP requires the higher octane fuel stock because of the supercharger. To not run the higher octane only risks damage to the motor because of the knock that one will see using it.

The GT's on the other hand don't need it when they are stock.

Yep, no reason to run premium unless you have an aftermarket PCM or mods like top swap and such. It will not benefit you at all with a stock (motor wise) Grand Prix GT.

Ha! $2.97 for premium today. First time I've seen it below $3/gal in several months. Finally they reopened a large refinery in Kansas that I believe was shut down for repairs, and it had driven up local gas prices. They've been steadily declining for quite awhile now.

dont ever say that again, man the gov't has brainwashed us, first we all pretty much never went above a dollar, then it shot up to 2, now to 3 bucks a gallon or more, we cant say, oh gas is good at 2.50 a gal. we have to say, it's better than 3.50, but still sux cuz we used to pay a dollar, dont get brainwashed by the gov't

What in the heck are you talking about? Gas prices fluxuate, and that's the way it is. No matter where you are in the world. The government has little, if any influence on the retail price of gasoline, so if you can't accept it, don't drive.

It's all relative, $2.50 sounds cheap when it has been as high as $3.50 in recent months, but this past winter I saw it go as low as $1.79 here, and then it shot up to $2.50, that seemed ridiculously expensive. Inflation and the declining value of the dollar are also partly to blame for "higher" prices.

During the gasoline crisis in 1981, the price of gasoline shot up to around $1.35 per gallon. In today's dollars, that works out to about $3.15 per gallon. Just for what it's worth. They were paying "less" as it might seem, but a dollar was worth much more back then so it equaled out.

I don't mind the prices that much, really. It's just a fact of life and I'm not willing to give up driving.
