Haven't been to active lately so sorry about that. But due to me working 4 - 5 days a week for the past few weeks I decided it was time to build a new PC then after that's taken care of I'll move back to the GP. But here are my specs if anyone is interested smile

Planning on building a new PC so here is what I have so far. It's mainly the build reines made for ruckus but I changed a couple things.

$129.99 - XFX GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

$189.99 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

$139.99 - ASUS P5Q Pro

$39.99 x2 - G.SKILL 2GB DDR2 800

$74.99 - Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB

LG - 22x Internal Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive

$69.99 - CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2

If it's not linked I already have it.

I have a spare case to put it in that way I can save some money on that.

What do ya think?

As long as you dont put that sticker on the case, sounds good. Trying to build a gaming platform? 4 gigs of RAM? Holy insane memory, Batman!

If building a gaming rig, invest more in the GPU and less in the CPU. I still haven't maxed my 2gb of memory out on my WinXP system. Vista might use it...

The memory's cheap enough I would go ahead and do the 4gig for the heck of it, can't hurt and could be useful in the future. Otherwise, I agree with rook. Quad-core is overkill, I'd go with a faster dual-core. Even then, the second core isn't going to get a lot of use. Then, max out your budget getting the best graphics card you can afford.

Well my main reason for the Q6600 is because the E6600 (isn't actually on newegg, though the E6550 is $175 and E6750 is $185...) is around $180. The Q6600 is also $180, so why get dual when quad is the same price.

I want this pc to be set for a few years that way when I'm done with high school the last thing I'm going to have to worry about is a new computer.

And I don't do and hardcore gaming I do mainly programming, gaming, and music recording and editing as well as video.

And hey the sticker is going to have to go somewhere since it'll be coming off of the car :p

In that case, thumbs up, should work well for what you're doing. You might consider upgrading to a 10k rpm hard drive.

Sounds nice. Take it from me, 4GiG is good. Are you going to run Vista? If you are building a gaming PC, go with XP. Graphics card, I would say to try to get more onboard memory (atleast a gig) with DDR3. Also, I would go with another board then Asus. I recommend Gigbyte personally. Asus is known to be slow, and not a performer. Another great site to look on is http://wwww.frys.com

Extra memory on a graphics card doesn't really help unless the card can utilize it. The 8800 can gain some with it, but it's not a 'must have'.

I'd suggest you look heavily at the new HD3000 series cards. They're producing lots of performance for affordable prices (I'm an ATI/AMD nut anyway).

See I have had good experience with ASUS but gigabyte i've had decent to no so good.

I'm thinking about trying vista mainly because XP 32 bit can't support more than 3.5 GB of ram and I would like to see how vista performs. I did hate vista a lot but I tried it on my buddies laptop and it wasn't as bad as when it first came out.

I could do a 64 bit xp to utilize all my RAM but I want to try something a little different.

And yea I love AMD but I know intel is in the lead now so im going to have to lean towards them. And ATI i've never had in any computers but my friend had it in his old dell laptop and it was pretty good. But I'm more of a Nvidia nut myself.

I'd go w/ 4 gigs of ram to play it safe. Great overclocker that Q6600 is! I got 3.4ghz on air cooling.

If you can do cars, you could build a pc easily. Same deal, read a lot of what other people say to learn whats good and whats not. And bonus over working on cars, you don't have to fight with mechanical BS (rust...), its all plug-and-play.
