My buddy's mustang needs new head gaskets. Dunno much specifics. Anyway he's been quoted 2 grand by a couple places. I'm thinking I could knock it out for less ;-) and I could take a couple weeks doing it since he doesn't drive the thing.

Anybody have any experience with this? Particularly on the 5.0 v8??

Bill

I'm somewhat familiar with the 4.6 V8 DOHC but not with the 5.0. I'm sure though you could get it done for far cheaper than that though.

Just out of curiosity, what happened to make it need new HG's??

I'm not surprized by the price as it would be a lot of work...and you'll need to make sure there is no head damage...sometimes head gaskets fail due to head warping.

btw zuul...clean out your pm box...its full and you cant recieve replies thumbsup

A local engine shop here charges something like $300 to break down the head, clean, and resurface. Not bad.

Unless the engine is a pain to work with in the bay, I don't see why the quotes are so high. 4.6 with the cam in the heads, yeah. 302? No.

I spent $1500 on a head gasket job for my 5.7L in my truck.

I woulda done it my self but took the truck in after fighting with it for two weeks to get the distributer and cam timed.

Original problem was a leaking intake gasket (thanks dex)pulled the intake changed the gasket found a bad injector assy. Put it all back together still had the misfire chalked it upto distributor sensor and cam sensor mis aligned. Need a computer to recal them. So took it to the shop. Found out I had a bent valve that was causing the misfire. (valve stuck open because of build up on the valve stem from sucking in coolant from the bad intake gasket). Since I was fed up with after messing with it I said to go ahead and perform the work.

So 2k sounds pretty much ball park. Remember Ford parts are a bit more pricey then GM parts.
