"Taking Chance"

This was film made by HBO but it should have been released into theaters. It is very simple but true story of Lt Cl Micheal Strobl who served in the Marine Corp during Operation Desert Storm. He chose to remain at a desk job for DOD for the remainder of his career. While reviewing casualty reports, he noticed the name of a young Corporal named Chance Phelps who was from Strobls' home town. The Lt. Colonel then volunteered to escort Cp. Phelps remains back home to his parents.

This is moving and powerful story that shows an element of our Armed Forces that I am sure few have ever seen. The ritual and strict procedure that is followed for every fallen soldier is only surpassed by the passion and honor of those who attend their every detail. The story continues with all of the various ways the escort soldier watches over and pays respect to his comrade who had given the last full measure of devotion for our Country. Even more moving are the many citizens the Lt. Colonel encounters on his journey and how the impact of their small but pure actions of patriotism and genuine remorse make indelible marks on his own life.

What began as an after-action report for Lt Cl Strobl turned into twenty pages of journal entires. Pages of pouring out emotions that he could not hold inside, pages that transcend any geo-political opinions about war or our role in other countries. This is a story that puts a very human face on the kind of dedication and loyalty that these young men and women possess, their love of their families, their friends and ultimately their country...but more importantly it shows how much this country truly loves them, and how their sacrifice is heartfelt with pride and honor.

Even if you have never been in the military, or know someone who has, you still owe it to yourself to see this film. Take 90 minutes of your life and be touched by a young, vibrant man who gave all he had for his buddies and has become a symbol of pride for the Marine Corp as a whole. Take 90 minutes and see how one week in Lt Cl Strobls life changed him forever and it is sure to touch the core of what makes us all American...and what it means when we say "God bless America"

Needless to say, a five star tribute to every soldier and the families who made them who they are.

(now available on DVD)

I watched that movie when it aired on HBO.

Having participated in the transport of a casket I can tell you that movie is spot on for accuracy.

I heard about the movie, and rented it from Netflix a couple months back. It is truly an AMAZING movie. Kevin Bacon did an amazing job in that role.
