wow what a crash. It seems like the racing world keeps loseing its stars. Kenny Irwan Jr, Adam Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr, now Paul Dana. not to mention all the others ive forgotten frown no

Well, racing is a dangerous sport. Indy cars are especially dangerous compared to stock cars.

What seems weird to me is how these are always "freak" crashes. I mean the Earnhart crash wasn't particularly hard into the wall. The Dana crash was just kind of an odd thing. But you see guys like Elliot Sadler go spinning through the air like a top during a race and they come out unscratched.

Terrible shame and quite tragic. Dana suffered a broken back during practice for the Indy 500 last year and spent from then to now rehabbing from that accident. Another few inches closer to the drivers cacoon and there would be an additional loss of life.

Part of the reason that the horrific looking crashes with multiple flips and spins don't cause as many injuries or as many deaths is that those wrecks slow the car gradually whereas crashes like this and Earnhardts crash cause the car to go from somewhere around 200 MPH to zero in an instant causing much more stress on the body.
