Never had a midsize one, but I did have a 2001 red Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 extended cab with a grey leather interior with only 21,000 miles on it. But then me and my twin bro had to sell it and we each got our own cars. That truck was awesome!!
I did always want a chevy s10 or a midsize truck, for some reason I've always liked them.
I'd say go for it. I'm not aware of any problems with them and I think they are good little trucks. Someone else will chime in if they know...
Good Luck!

I'd go 4x4. Buts thats just me. I'm not a big fan of the lowrider thing. But do whatever you like best. After all it is YOUR car.

I went for the Dakota because it was the biggest mid-size truck available.
Get a 4x4 and at least a V6.
I've had my Dakota for 3 years (60k miles). It's never been in the shop. I do regular oil changes and have no problems. I went for the manual because it's the Jeep X15 tranny from the Wrangler and not an actual Dodge tranny.

I had a '01 S-10 SS and I loved it. Had the 4.3 V-6, that had quite a bit of power to start with, and there are several mods out there for it. I did the CAI and TB spacer, and I lowererd mine another 2" (already lowered 2" from the factory). The truck got about 20 mpg. on the hwy. and I still had plenty of power to pull my 18" ski boat.

Not for the speed but the raw power for getting the job done. Plus he is on his third tranny with that truck.

Stick with the S-10 with the v6. There's a lot where I live that sounds very nice with the double side exhaust and clear lights.

Buy and old fullsize and lift it! At least that's what I've had a lot of fun with!
