My dad's Expedition is actin up on him. He went to drive it and it it sounded like the tranny was grinding when he put it in drive. I drove it around a while and it was still doing it. I put it in 2nd and it was fine. He had to drive a ways back home cause we were on a job and I told him to drive home in 2nd. He said that if he starts it in 2nd and then switches to drive its fine. Must be something wrong with 1st gear I suppose. Let me know what y'all think. I know its been a while. Thanks in advance.

Ford trannys are very very weak... what year? also, the shift cable on fords needs to be adjusted sometimes too.

Oh yeah? It's a 2000. I'll have to check on that shift cable. You think that there is something specific to the '00's that would make it do that? Thanks.

Even when you put it in 2nd, doesn't it still start in 1st, then shift and hold in 2nd?

In my dads truck, a 02 F-150, it starts in 2nd when it's in 2nd I believe. We were talking about it for some reason awhile back and he showed me. Kind of like the second gear start switch in older GPs.

Man, I don't have a clue about all that. It's still sittin in the driveway though. He's been using my brothers Jeep for the mean time. He says he's gonna take it to a tranny shop. We'll see what they say.

Time for an update...I took my dads Expedition to AAMCO, they said it was gonna be $600 for them to drop the tranny and inspect it. After that they would see what needed to be done to it, and if we decided to do the rebuild with them, the $600 would go toward that. So they're gonna do that Tuesday. They guy said the total would be anywhere from $2500 to $2900!!!! That's insane. I've never had a tranny rebuilt, but I thought it would be around $1500 at the most. I called Ford and they said anywhere from 3 to 5K. So we left it at AAMCO.

it cost $1600 to get my trans rebuilt, but to me 2.5-3k is crazy high (or at least to my bank account)

That is crazy. I would check somewhere else... always shop around. Never bite on the first one, take it somewhere else and say, "Okay, AAMCO says $3k, can you do it for less?"

Keep doing that and I would be willing to bet you could get it done for $2k or less.

That does seem high...I've always heard rear wheel drive cars/trucks are much cheaper to rebuild than front wheel drive anything.

when my civic's trans needed to be rebuilt it was 1800.
and you could maybe get a new trans for around 2500+ labor.

Well, I just got off the phone with the guy from AAMCO. He said the Planetary something was all messed up and that we should change all the solenoids due to all the metal shavings that were in it. It's gonna come out to $3,030. He said that gave me about $300 worth of discounts 'cause he quoted me at $2900 for the initial estimate. Who knows how true that is, but whatever. I called around and all the other shops told me the same. My dad doesn't run it like crazy. It's got less miles than my GTP, and I haven't had any problems with that. How can soemthing like this happen?

My uncle swears that fords are not good cars but my mom has a taurus and it has 130,000 miles on it but it has a few problems and I have to replace the steering pump and rack and pionion, but other that that it never left her on the side road since it was brand new back in 2000
