Ok my neighbor has an 89 grand am. This is what I don't get. His serpentine belt schredded in half and has only half a belt.? confused

Never seen that before in my life. The question is, How in the hell do you replace the belt. I mean he has a serpentine tool, but there is not enough room to get the tool and the socket on to the tention pulley. Tried going under the car and the same thing, no room........ What do we need to do, drop that side of the engine or what....

Do you have to put a socket on it? Is there a square hole in the tensioner arm for a ratchet/breaker bar to engage instead?

there's no rachet hole and yes you need a socket on it. I can finger it to get the socket on it(pulley) but after that, there's not enough room to get the bar onto the socket.....

Does the bolt stick out enough for a box end wrench? That could be an option. Also, belt tools usually come with shorter than normal sockets and box-end adapters.

Sorry I couldn't help much. I'd have to have been there to play with my tools. I know one Sunfire in particular was PITA and there was no easy way to do it.
