Yep, KVET. Heard it too.
One reason gas is so high in the US is because almost half of what we pay is tax. If we didn't pay any tax on our gas, prices would just about be cut in half.

cheapest place that i saw friday was about 5 minutes from the house and it was:

2.49 / 87
2.57 / 91
2.65-67 / 93 can't remember which one it was

hell, think it's bad filling a gp up, try filling a up diesel truck that holds 38 gallons.
at 2.50 or more a gallon, it usually near $100 to feel up, and it don't get the mileage that the gp gets either!

My Dakota gets 19 on the highway (3.9, V6, 5spd), my father's Tahoe gets 15 (with 130k miles and NO tuneup).
Actually, the Tacoma was used as well, so the tax was included in the trade (pretty even). He says he gets close to 30mpg with it and is saving a ton. I'll have to take his word for it though since I don't drive it. He's happy, that's what matters.

There is some interesting reading to be had in the most recent National Geographic, entitled "Life after oil" or something similar. What we have to realize is that the inflating cost of gas is just a visible side-effect of the overall worldwide energy crisis. It isn't going to get any better guys, don't expect prices to drop, or even stabilize, anytime soon.

One thing people don't realize is the effect that the chinease market is playing on the cost of oil as well. China is the fastest growing auto market and it doesn't look like it's gonna slow down anytime soon.

Taxes have very little effect on oil prices. Taxes are as much as 33 cent per gallon (New York).
http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/margins/

More than 50% of our oil is imported. Note that Canada and Mexico are our largest sources of imported oil. Scan down to the map on SOURCES OF US OIL IMPORTS. Mexico was 13% and Saudi Arabia was 14% but the percentage has changed as the gulf of Mexico is becoming a hot spot.

(sorry this one's so long everybody)
yet, the technology is there, and we refuse to use it??

I don't get it. we can produce ethanol, biodiesel, and all sorts of other things that will run it our engines without any modifications, yet our lovely government won't allow proper funding, etc to make it so that we use far less oil. I personally believe that if the oil companies, and everybody else would just get off their lazy butts and utilize the technology that we have (across the whole spectrum in regards to petroleum), then we wouldn't have to import any oil, and we could clean up the environment as well as eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.

ask yourself this question: if the price of 87 was 2.50/gallon, and the pump next to it was ethanol (89, priced at 2.48/gallon and proven to burn a lot cleaner, helping the environment out significantly) which nozzle would you reach for and put into your tank?
