Google Earth
Click and download the free version. Some areas are more detailed than others. It's pretty freakin cool. I've been wasting a lot of time looking around at stuff.
You can find an Air Force base and see all the planes they have. I looked at Deyes AFB near Abilene. Tarmac was full of B1B Bombers.

My house is at 30*25'56.03"N, 97*43'00.02"W

Look up Las Vegas and go North-Northwest until you find Groom Lake (aka Area 51). Maybe Hercman can tell us what goes on there. wink

Herc\'s hood
That service has been around a long time. At least since 97. Maybe not through google but through msn terraserver.
Here's my neighborhood. my house is on the lower loop on the left side building by the main road. The carport on the right is mine. herc\'s office
Picture is before my squadron had moved there.

area 51 is on groom lake (dried up). the reason a big part appears white is because of the dried saltwater lake.
herc, i've been to the border. just dont go past those signs that say "we'll kill you if you pass these signs" and you should be fine laugh

oh, and if you are going, do a little internet research ahead of time and find out the good roads up to the base borders...enjoy! you'll never get a view of the actual base, because they expanded the borders to prevent that, but the view of the border/entrance (signs, cameras, white jeeps) is cool enough. enjoy...

Google Earth has been down only if you tried to install it today. I was showing it to people at work and when they installed it from a saved .exe, it would not connect to the server. Only worked from my computer because I had activated it before today.

I have it on my work PC. If you still can't download it by Tuesday, I can host the .exe when I get back to my desk. My guess would be that if you can't download new copies, then you probably can't connect to the main server. It will free up over time, probably next week.

i sent the file to a friend cause she couldn't download it from them, and she can't get a connection with their servers either.
i'd imagine all these new people playing around with it for hours are using up quite a bit of bandwidth for their servers! they'll eventually get a little bored, however, and free up some bandwidth. hah.

I found a plane just as it's taking off at Tokyo Int'l Airport.
Look at the shadow of the front of the plane. You can just see the shadow of the front gear as it just comes off the ground...

I downloaded the program yesterday and this thing is addictive!..."I've been everywhere man!"...my wife is a photographer and she is blown away by the resolution of a lot of these places...we checked out Old Quebec City, the Las Vegas strip,Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse monument, her old place on Staten Island, Ground Zero (that was quite an old image) the plant where I work,Paris France, the Pyramids, the Acropolis, the Great Wall of China,Pearl Harbor, Washington DC and the Glaciers of Alaska...Alas out homeplace is such crappy resolution we can hardly make out the city, much less our house...has anyone else noticed that the selection of hi-res areas coordinates with what seems like Homeland security (like possible target areas)...near my home, all the water supply sources and industrial and power sites are hi-res but the downtown areas and lots of residential are very poor quality.

How is it that no one has gone here (36.05N x 112.07W) yet? It's only one of the friggin wonders of the world. It's huge too, you have to really scroll around to fully view, but it's highly detailed photos

Dober, I beleive that'll be the Grand Canyon, or atleast it sounds like it from your description. That was one of the first places I went to.

You got it Bobby - wanted to make people check it out instead of saying what it was, because from the satellite pictures you get a real idea of just how 'grand' it is.

Here's a couple for ya guys...

the really big Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro

and the Nazca lines... however the resolution isn't good enough to make them out, but I verified the coordinates.

Kind of disappointing what areas are not high res - alot of the natural wonders of the world are very poor quality areas.

back with more shots (I'm a bit of a New York nut, but its an amazing city)...but as I mentioned last...Top of the World Ma!!!...Mt Everest...the altitude guage works pretty well, at 36k ft it looked like you could almost touch the summit.

Onward to New York City...and Ground Zero...the clean up was complete by this shot but before the new rail hub and the freedom tower cornerstone.

The USS Intrepid floating museum, docked on the Hudson river just a few blocks north of the Javits Center...lots of cool aircraft and displays.

This is Central Park...check out the altitude, gives you an idea of just how big this park is, and its completely fabricated...not the first tree or shrub was indigenous to Manhattan Island...the large building or the right side is the Metroplotlitan Museum of Art (my wife loves this place) you could get lost for days in that place...the famous ice rink is in the northeast corner.

...and on a slightly morbid but interesting note, this is New York City's version of Alcatraz, except that it isnt closed. This is Rikers Island Prison Facility,as you can see the entire Island is a prison, and a darn big one at that...to the lower right is LaGuardia Airport, which is about the same overall size...I guess for a city this big you need a big BIG house!

still trying to find an area of the Great Wall of China that has some decent res...no luck yet.

I found Goodyears test track near Ft Stockton, TX.
The circle is part of the test track. It's 8 miles across.
Jaguar brought the XJ220 to this track. They tried to get the XJ220 up to 220mph, unfortunately because of the constant turn, they were only able to reach 218.

Check out what I found ESE of Austin. According to the alt reading, it can be clearly seen from over 30k feet in the air. 30k-35k is where most airliners cruise at.
Trees, freaking trees!
