My thought are with you and your family in this time. for what its worth, it is very common to have a post operative infection such as pneumonia. Im certain that once a blood culture has been determined they will act quickly to combat the infection. Given his weakened state they have to balance the risk vs benefit of the treatments available. The fluid on his lungs might also be due to heart failure secondary to his MI. Is he on a vent ( breathing tube) what sort of IV infusions is he on? they should be documented on the bags..I can help you understand the problems if you like, just need more information. Sorry I missed the second page of updates....my bad...good to hear he has rallied...For what its worth atrial fib is the most common arrthymia on the planet...it is easily corrected by oral medications....digoxin for example as well as a blood thinner...so you know A fib is a condition where the top of the heart (atria) stop working properly..as a result his intrinsic heart rate will be irregular...and he is prone to clots (hence the blood thinners) make sure he keep taking his meds..even when he feels fine....good to hear....

well today we have EXCELLENT NEWS!!!

Last night he was awake and talking! This morning they sat him up in a chair in his room at 6:30. They are going to plan on taking out a couple IV's and possibly the insulin drop and just use an injection insulin. They are planning on putting him in a regular recovery room in the next couple days. He is moving soo quickly with his recovery and im sooo thankful for everything God has given me to get the family and I through these hard times.

Wow, I didn't even see this thread. I'm glad everything is okay. This is his second chance, so tell him that you love him because I had a aunt that died of brain cancer and never told her that I loved her, and my mother can go at anytime right now. So just call him all the time and make sure you be there for your grandpa.

I live with my grandpa and trust me from now on I wont be taking anything for granted with either one of my grandparents.

Well I saw him tonight, and he is doing great! He had physical therapy and the PT said that this morning he only walked about 20 feet and for his afternoon session he walked from his bed( bed 11) all the way to the end of the hallway to bed 16(which is about another 50 feet or so) and back. He still needs a lot more therapy with his lungs because they are not up to par yet, but his walking is doing great.

Well today is another awesome step!!!!

He has FINALLY been moved out of ICU to a cardiac and physical therapy floor. He is sharing a room with another gentleman. I am so happy that he is doing great! Im hopeful that he should be home by Thanksgiving!! Keep praying guys!

well here is another update:

He has alot of his strength back and his is walking on his own without a walker and/or assitance. They are going to be moving him from the cardiac care unit in the next couple days to a rehab room so that they can try and get him home by thanksgiving. The heart surgeon brought up ALOT of students and doctors to his room the other day and showed them what a miracle is! My grandma and grandpa started to cry because they both know that he wasnt supposed to live past the operating table!

Im actually tearing up while posting this because i love him so much and i cant believe he is progressing this fast after having major heart surgery 2 weeks ago!!!!

I CANT THANK EVERYONE ENOUGH FOR ALL THE HELP/SUPPORT THAT I HAVE BEEN GIVEN THROUGH THIS VERY HARD TIME FOR ME AND MY FAMILY! ALL OF YOUR PRAYERS/THOUGHTS HAVE BEEN MORE THAN GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I told my grandpa that all of my friends on my car forum are prayering for him and he said tell them thank you!

Well my grandpa is coming home tomorrow! ALL the doctors have cleared him today for discharge tomorrow!!!! He has to go back to the VA 3 times a week for exercises though. But at least now i get my grandpa back home!
