My wife's truck has an AC leak at the seal in the condenser. The shop wants $750 to install a remanufactured condensor, filter and dryer in order for it to be under warranty.

Then the guy tells me that it's a known issue with these condensers and he's replaced 3 on his Yukon.

My wife is 9 months pregnant and needs AC, and I don't blame her. But does this sound plausible to you?

If I'm going to shell out $750 every year or two, I might just get a new truck. This one probably only blue books for about $3000 anyway.

I just spent $80+ on supplies and I haven't bought my compressor yet. The compressor and dryer are probably going to come up to a couple hundred and I'm doing all the labor.

So depending on how much a condensor is I can see how it could be plausible.

A seal on the condenser is bad, so they want you to replace it and not the seal? Smack them, will you?

If it truly is a seal leaking and not a hole in the condenser, try one of the stop leaks out there. They help swell the seals to stop leaks just like this. Worth a try before shelling out some serious money.

That's what I told him, and I asked about rebuilding them. He said you need special tools and jigs to be able to rebuild these condensors.

I've seen some online for about $300 so I guess $750 isn't too bad for all three parts plus install.

He said he'd do the condensor alone for under $500 so that might be the route I take. It just won't be under warranty should it fail. I found out my wife's truck is closer to $6500 blue book so I can justify the $500 a little easier...still sucks though.

Go price the parts he wants to install. Honestly, there are no special parts to the seals. You undo the fitting and place he new oring in there and reattach it.

Huh. Well it's like $500 in parts and $200 labor if I want it under warranty. Keep in mind that includes purging the system, vaccuuming the system, and then refilling it with R134 (the purge and vaccuum is something I would have to pay someone to do anyway).

I'm just gonna do the $500 route and be done with it.
